I cannot add login items in the accounts pane. Item disappears on reboot

I can go throough the process of adding a login item and the item appears in the list. Problem is that when i reboot, the item has disappeared from the list.

How do I stop the item from disappearing. Is there another way to add login items??

Mac OS X (10.5.8)

First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions.

Then move these files to the Desktop...

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginitems.plist

Reboot, set them up again, & test.

PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
