My iPhone 4s stopped playing almost all sounds on the speaker. No music, no games, no keyboard clicks, text tones.
The only thing that works, it's ringing when someone calls me and I can put calls on speaker.
Also, when I press the volume up and down buttons I get the ringer symbol, but no status bar.
Has anyone experienced something similar? And how to fix it?
Go to Settings> Sound...
If everything set well, it should work properly. If still experiencing problem, backup your phone first, and then restore your phone to factory mode.. Still same, then you have to approach apple store, and they will help. (Mostly they will exchange the new phone)
Resetted phone to factory more. Sound works fine, until I applied the first settings you have to go through in the first steps. Going to the genius bar now
Do the reset then restore your phone from ur backup. You do not need to do all the stuff.... After you restore your backup, if you have problem, better to approach apple store.
I have just been experiencing the same problem, my iphone 4s does not play any audio through the speakers and there is no volume status shown when you press the volume buttons. i have tried restoring from back ups etc.
i have come to the conclusion that it is a software bug.. When you go into settings > sounds > then move the "ringer and alerts" slider or the flip the "change with buttons" button off then on it works breifly while still on that screen however stops once again when you change screen
I took the iPhone to the genius bar and the genius checked if something was stuck in the headphone jack or the port on the bottom. The genius couldn't find anything and quite surprisingly my phone was working fine while at the genius bar.
It hasn't acted up since. The genius told me, however, if it happened again and come back, they would replace the phone right away.

just found out my iphone does not have any sound except music and fone calling. tried to look for solutions then i found the button on the very top , above your volume button on the left side has been switched to mute????? so switch it back and you get sound again LOL hope that helps
did you find out the problem? i have come to the conclusion for those who do the headphone jack trick and there still is no sound that it isnt the headphones thats the problem its the charger port which plays thru the usb on some things. for ex. i have an audio reciever at home which has playback thru usb. my speakers stoped working about a weak ago. i played music thru rec then pulled out cord on bottom of phone and my speakers worked for about an hour or so then stopped again. even crazier instance is when i leave my car charger in the phone ( even if it is chrging or not) and the sound plays the whole time untill i take the charger out again. i didnt have problems untill the update. ny solution to this?
I went to the Genius bar and they said something must have gotten stuck either in the headphone jack or USB port. I am assuming it was a drop of rain, because my phone started to act weird when I was checking messsages in the drizzle.
It has never happened again.
