Animations and interactivity

There has been some criticisim of early submissions from iBA for their lack of interactivity/animation.

I have been having great sucess using Keynote to generate animated files for use in iBA. I have generated some very snappy Intro Media files by creating a 1024x768 slide, animating to my heart's content and then exporting as quicktime video (converting to Apple TV format so iBA accepts it). I have also played some very complex Keynote presentations via the Keynote widget.

I have the advantage of being quite proficient at Keynote (and keynote animations in particular) but if you're haing trouble getting some pazzazz into your book take a look at generating some stuff in Keynote. It's very cool!

When I chose to Keynote > Export, then select the Quicktime tab, there are options there that needed adjustment. If i just choose 'Playback Uses: Manual Advance', the resulting .mov file can't be transcoded into a .m4v file. If I choose 'Fixed TImings', and 1 sec for the SLide duration, that achieved the result I was looking for.

Thanks for the suggestion.

trilogy1000 - Thanks for this info. I've been researching and pondering what's the best way to do a more interactive and animated book. First book is planned to be a picture book, where lots of interactivity, sounds, and animations would be helpful.

A few questions:

  1. I know Keynote and Pages fairly well, but haven't done animations in Keynote. Do you know of any resources with more info on advanced Keynote techniques?
  2. I've seen in these forums the "page" size for iBA as 1024 x 768, but some have noted and I have experienced that iBA itself seems to create horizontal pages at 1024 x 748. Any guidance on page size?
  3. And... does iBA consider the entire 1024 width to be two pages? That is, does it automatically put the "virtual shadow" down the middle of a book at 512 pixels?
