In Safari: Back and Forward buttons missing from tool bar?

MAC 20 inch early 2008

OS X 10.6.8

Safari 5.1.2.

In Safari: After entering a topic in Google search, a list of suggestions properly appears. When then selecting one of the suggestions, that new page appears correctly too except that there is no Back and Forward button in the tool bar and I can only return by some other inefficient means.

It appears I have turned off this function and now have been unable to retrieve it. Help much appreciated.
