Question

new iCloud acc Apple ID & email

My friend currently uses a 3rd party email address and I think it would be useful for her to sign up to iCloud to sync her Contacts and Bookmarks across 2 Macs and an iPhone.

She currently has an Apple ID ((used with iTunes) which has her 3rd party email and a password.

If she registers for iCloud how does this work....

Can she obtain a .me email address even though her current Apple ID has the other email address?

Could she make a new Apple ID?

Any advice appreciated

I would like to encourage her to change heremail to a .me account as this will syncronise across her devices

but this may be too inconvenient - we'll see.

(I wonder if talktalk provide an email forwarding service - if so she could have all her email forwarded to .me email)

She can create an iCloud account using her Apple ID for iTunes (Apple encourage this, but it's not necessary). Upon creating a new account she can create a me email account which she can then use as her email address.

She can continue to log into iCloud withe her Apple ID or use her new me address to log in if she wishes, of course there isn't any need to keep logging in on the macs or iOS devices, but you may need to if she visits iCloud.com

No idea about talk talk services but many people do forward their email to their me account.

Are you saying she can create an iCloud account without using her current Apple ID ?

Yes she could use a new ID to create an iCloud account too, it does however need to be a verifiable address.

So she can create a new - what will it be called - a 2nd Apple ID or iCloud ID ??

And she can use a new .me email and password - right?

Yes but just to be clear she can only use one iCloud account as a primary account.

Ok so if she has her new iCloud account with .me email and password...

say she wants to buy something from the iTunes store and it asks for her Apple ID

which one should she use?

She should use her iTunes Apple ID (the one she has always used, she doesn't want to be changing that one), iCloud and iTunes are different accounts.

Right !!! - now we're getting somewhere.

So if asked for her Apple ID that would be the iTunes one not the iCloud one ?

Her iCloud email and password are NOT her Apple ID?

or are they interchangeable?

So if she signs up for this iCloud account and .me email

I assume her talktalk pop email account will continue to work as normal - right?

I asked them and they do not have an email forwarding facility

they said I could try 3rd party email forwarding software

Yes you can still use pop accounts with mail.

You could use mail rules to forward the pop mail if you wanted.
