How accurate GPS with distance walked?

Hello,

I'm not interested into how accurate the GPS is when pinpointing my fixed posistion while I'm standing still

What I would like to know is how accurate it is when it comes to measuring the distance I'm travelling, while walking, in real time

e.g. If I take two-steps forward 1.4 meters (4.5 feet) how quickly can the GPS calculate this distance in real time?

I'm not asking for an app that does that, I'm devleoper and I want to implement something like the above in an app, but it will only work if I can accurately measure the distance travelled while walking, in real time

Unfortunately, RunKeeper beat you to it ... http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/runkeeper/id300235330?mt=8

I use the app nearly everyday. GPS works perfectly.

Thanks for the tip Carolyn but I'm not trying to create an app of that kind.

My app has nothing to do with sports, tracking distances, running etc..

I just need to use the distance travelled while walking as a "trigger" for my app to do something.

e.g. Let's say I start walking, and I want my app to do "something" once I've walked two steps forward for example..

Thanks for your reply Dave,

just to get this clear.. What you mean is that the GPS is more accurate when it comes to long distances or short distances?

As I noted in my previous reply, I want to use the GPS to track distances travelled, while walking, of about 2 human steps.. (that's rougly 4.5 feet I'm guessing)

So that if I take 2 two steps forward an event is triggered in my app..

Thanks for your helpful inputs everyone!

So as it stands, with the given technology there is basically no way of writing code where an event is triggered once the user has taken two steps forward or in general after a short distance towards some direction is travelled (5 feet max.)

(I'm not even getting into accelormeters because I've done my research and they're highly inaccurate when it comes to tracking linear movement..)

shame...

I'm not arguing with your statements. I was incorrect and you had more up-to-date information than I did, but I have followed up with good references for the OP to look at and my first sentence was correct "GPS accuracy is, at best, within about 20ft so there will always be some variance over long distances".

I'm not sure why yoou felt the need to argue with my US Government comment three times. I read it the first time and didn't dispute it.

You don't work for them do you? 😉
