Problems with receiving Message In Chinese ( from China)

I bought and use my iphone 4S in Holland. I could send message in Chinese from my iphone, but I couldn't read Chinese message sent from China. All message shown in my iphone is wrong code, but I can receive Chinese message sent by my friends living in Holland. I don't understand why Chinese message sent from China is not able be recognized by my iphone 4S. Do you know how to solve the problem? Thanks!

It is probably an encoding problem, and if you are talking about SMS it could also be a carrier issue. There is nothing you can do other than perhaps switch your OS between Chinese and English and see if that makes a difference.

Dear Tom Gewecke,

Thanks a lot! I'm also thinking encoding, my friend told me simplified Chinese has Unicode and GB code( don't know if it's ture), I heard GB code was using in China. In case encoding is the ture reason, how can I change code of my iphone?

Yes, I'm indeed talking SMS, but I just checked with my friend here, she is using iphone4 and just received one SMS this morning from China in order, and she forwarded that message to my iphone4s, it's also no problem, we are using the same carrrier here KPN, so it seems carrier is OK. Can you please explain what's " OS"? Thanks!

The iPhone is completely unicode enabled. It should encode outbound SMS messages containing Chinese characters in unicode.

Do you know how your friend in China sends you SMS messages, is it with an iPhone, a phone from another manufacturer, or via a website? For compatibility, all non-ascii SMS messages should be encoded in unicode, but some older phones and websites may use a non-standard encoding.

Can you ask your friend in China to send your friend in Holland a test message? If the message arrives garbled, then the problem is with your friend in China. Find out how he/she is sending it and if there is an option to select unicode for the message.
