Picasa with photo stream

Yeah yeah I know iPhoto & Picasa don't work together & probably what I want to achieve isn't gonna work.

I prefer just one Apple feature over Picasa .

Photostream - even with the constraints of no selective delete but I prefer Picasa's edit functions and upload albums & a bit more.

Is there any way to use Photostream to grab the pics the discard iPhoto?

If I import into Picasa, I end up with a pile of nested folders each containing a single pic or a couple of pics.

Sorry if my post was unclear.

I mean that I ónly want to use the Photostream function of iPhoto and use Picasa as my only manager of photos.

I don't want to use both because I realise that they don't function together.

When I open iPhoto and rush over to Photostream, add the photos to iPhoto ( shame I can't add directly into PIcasa ) , then import into Picasa, I end up with multiple folders each containing either a single photo or perhaps a couple.

So , I close down iPhoto and spend time sorting the photos in Picasa into just one folder.

If I *must* use only Iphoto and delete Picasa, I still want to abiltity to upload to the G account.

I have been able to disable the events feature in Iphoto and it's now working better but I prefer the edit functions and general interface of Picasa but I *could* live without it if I was able to still upload to my Picasa/Google account.

Hope this makes my request for guidance clearer and thx for any help.

Dastard.

I am not familiar with Photostream, hence my reply may not be germane.

However, I have been using all iterations of Picasa on my iMac and find not the slightest conflict with iPhoto.

Both apps have features the other lacks which is regrettable since the duplicated camera downloads eat up a lot of real estate. I solved that by installing an external drive dedicated to photos and movies.

It is unfortunate that the one feature absent in iPhoto that many users here are also seeking, is the adding of text to a photo. Thus I must import pictures into Picasa, do the editing AND adding of text, and then move them to iPhoto because of its superior Events file system. Of course this relates only to photos one actually wants to print out since one can always use captions when mailing them.

I would gladly pay for such a feature - free with Picasa - to help Apple with their profits.

Now I read that Korean has been added as a foreign language. Let's hope that one of our Asian friends will come up with a solution in this Forum which is sorely lacking attention in the Apple compound. I erroneously assumed it to be monitored by staff.

While I was still subscribed to Apple Care, I brought this question up but could never get it resolved - even after upgrading to Snow Leopard.

I know I'm not Koren but this seems to me a very obvious alternative: set Preview - or indeed an Image Editor - as an external editor in iPhoto. Send the pic from iPhoto to it. Add your text. Save it back to iPhoto. Rather more simple and no duplicating of imports etc etc etc.

Others have not been so lucky. But the real issue for someone like you is that Picasa uses an unsupported hack to access the iPhoto Library. They don't use the standard APIs put there specifically for other apps to integrate with iPhoto. As the hack is unsupported at any point an update to iPhoto can render it useless, or worse actively dangerous.

Don't know that I can help you, as this is down to how Picasa interacts with iPhoto - that unsupported hack again. Best I can suggest is that you post a feature request to Picasa and see if they can devise a solution.

Google do have a plug-in that uploads directly to Picasa web albums from iPhoto, and even without it I have no issues uploading to a G+ Account.

Dastard:

This is the first time I ever had a response in this forum, thanks.

My version of Picasa is 3.8.9.390 if that makes a difference. Unless you download your SD card in one fell swoop, i.e., from one event in one day, Picasa will split your haul in segments by the day or even hour.

For a test, take a number of pictures in succession and then download them. They should all go into one folder. I never leave anything in the camera over night, am too anxious to see what I took, edit it and discard all "duds".

Terence:

Thanks for chiming in. Last night I was able to use the "Annotate" feature with "Preview" for the first time. There is no detailed explanation available - even in "bibles" such as "The missing Manual" by David Pogue, nor is its use intuitive. No other app is involved.

I have never used the "unsupported hack" you mention and thus cannot judge its functioning.

I hope that I'm not violating some protocol by bundling two subjects.

No, you can't use Photostream with Picassa without first going thru iPhoto. This is from the Apple Photoshare site:

Take a photo on an iOS device. Or import a photo from your digital camera to your computer. iCloud automatically pushes a copy of that photo over any available Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection to the Photos app on your iOS devices, iPhoto or Aperture on your Mac, and the Pictures Library on your PC

Whoops ! I spoke too soon.

I have uninstalled Picasa and when I try to edit a photo such as rename it , I get an error dialogue saying that the ;file is unreadable and is not in library.

Then I get a long wait which nothing is imported. Upon checking, there is indeed a duplicate which also cannot be edited without this error message.

The photos ARE in the Library.

I have noticed that if I use he double tap on the photo, then I can edit it but there is no way to save the new name.

Hope I have not done the wrong thing by appending this to the thread instead of starting a new one, but I believe that the problem is somehow related to the previous Picasa installation alongside iPhoto, which , as I say , is now deleted using AppDelte.

dasdart:.

Are you using Time Machine? Then you're safe. If there are not too many that you have deleted, maybe somebody more savy can help. Sorry!

It's also probably too late for you but I just installed Picasa 3.9 with some great upgrades. If I can learn "by heart" the nine steps to use iPhoto's annotate feature, I can do without Picasa's one stop text overlay saving much real estate.

Actually, I haven't 'lost' anything. Rather I am gaining multiple copies of photos.

😕

What I want to achieve very simply it this.

Use Photosteam

Use iPhoto to mange my files and import from camera or photostream.

Manage means, Rename ( Batch or singly ) - use my own folder structure not these 'events' which is totally unsuitable for me since I take photos singly mostly and import them when I get round to it. ( Photostream makes that very easy.

Finally, upload them to Picasa albums or Google+ ( Thx to TD for that tip.)

Most of this I can now achieve apart from the editing in iPhoto.

I don't need to annotate or write stuff other than the file name.

I have 'sacrificed' my usual Picasa in order to use iPhoto which surely now gives me the ability to do the above ?

Thx,

ok guys , I think I've got it.

I have to import the photos into my photos folder.

I've reduced the events thing to just one per week and it's no big deal to drag one folder into another in order to consolidate the folders and be left with just one main folder.

I had to re-assign the 'edit with' to use iPhoto and now editing including file renaming , batch or singly works fine.

So far, I am happy with it.
