Importing CD to itunes.Where is it

I have not used itunes in a year or so. I use to be able to take my CD import it and I would see it in music . Now I cannot find it anywhere except in some other file area not in itunes. After importing CD I use to take each song and make a playlist. BUT I cannot find the music in itunes library. It use to be so easy. Am I forgetting to do something?? Now I'm finding duplicates in folders somewhere else on the computer. Very odd
