Apps in background reducing battery life

just downloaded a gps app (telenav) that came with a warning that it will greatly reduce battery life while running in the background. I already notice it is draining my battery. How do I stop this app and others from running in the background when I am not using them?

I have to wonder why the battery consuming apps run in the background anyways. Maybe while plugged into power it may make a nice option but a dead Iphone is pretty much a pain. All advice always says, close the apps running in background. My question is, what is there purpose and why cant you just turn off background apps all together. I would gladly wait an extra fraction of second for an app to respond if not in the background.

A number of GPS navigation apps run in the background for a good reason. When arriving at a destination, you can quit the app. While such an app is running, the location services icon will be available in the status bar as a reminder for one.

A music streaming app will be playing music in the background, which you can hear. If you no longer want to hear the music streaming in the background, quit the app.

Very few apps, and based on the total number of apps available is just a handful that run in the background since there is no reason or benefit for the overwhelming majority of apps to do so. A GPS navigation app running in the background allows for performing other functions while the app is running so your location is not lost and if a turn needs to be made you can still hear it. GPS navigation apps take longer than a fraction of a second to get GPS acquisition again from a cold start. And when such an app is being used, it is while in a vehicle where a vehicle charger can be used.

A music steaming app should be self explanatory.

Yes, I completely get it to have all that running in background like GPS, When you are plugged in as in driving a car. If on foot and using the GPS there is usually time to check your coordinates, lol. Unless of course you are using it to map your run or work out. If that is the case you better have a full charge just before leaving because getting 2 hours of that type of use will surely drain your battery.

Such a small battery requires two power schemes for such a robust operating system. My point was, If I were stranded somewhere and with out power, I would want every bit of battery available for as long as possible. Once the smart phone is dead and you are left with out power, well, not alot of uses.
