Cannot clear Facetime's "red dot" of missed calls. Help!

I Found that I was able to clear the red dot by deleting all the missed calls from both the face time and audio only lists.

HOWEVER, this behavior is inconsistent with how the iPhone "phone" app hanldes missed calls where it will clear the red dot by simply reviewing the missed call list. I should not have to delete missed calls individually because I may still want the record of those calls even though I missed them.

FIrst try to deactivate FaceTime and activating again.

Have you tried to reproduce the issue using other user acocunt on Mac OS X? If the new user does not duplicate the issue, go to Finder (using your account) and then ~/Library/Preferences and move com.apple.FaceTime.plist to trash and restart your computer. If you this new user is having the same issue, has to Repair Disk Permissions using Disk Utility.

What item list? There's only one window in FaceTime, the video chat window, and it doesn't have a list in it.

I'm sure that deleting the preferences, and the rebooting will fix the issue, but if that's the only way to clear the badge off the icon, then this is a real bug.

Oh, I see, there's a missed calls item in the contextual menu you get when right clicking on the dock icon.

Sadly, that just shows a darkened screen with nothing on it. Clicking on that screen takes me back to the Finder, where the badge persists to taunt me.

This is a Bug in the Latest iOS8.1.

After calling the Missed caller back,

The Solution is to go to Settings/Facetime/ slide off/ Reboot/ Repeat and slide Facetime back on.
This should clear notifications until the Fix arrives in the next facetime Update. Its disappointing, because its a simple fix in the code.

time is going, 3 years since this post was made, but in El Capitan the same problem, is it really so hard to fix this bug for 3 years?!

i turned off a missed call badge in facetime, but now i can't see if there was a missed call...

I have had the same problem for a while.

I found a solution today.

Checking my iPhone I found two missing calls there.

They were not flagged on the phone but opening the app on the phone showed them.

After clearing those the red dot went away on my laptop.

A bit cloudy I guess...

If the notification was synchronised on all devices it would be easier to understand.

A bug indeed in my humble opinion.

I just had this issue occur for me as well with El Capitan. RIght clicking on the Dock icon was of no help. But, if you start Facetime and you have the list of calls, right click on the item in that list and you'll get an option to remove it. Voila'

What everyone is seeing to this particular problem is the "Notification Badge app icon" for FaceTime, Not a missed call although it shows the same Red indicator as well.

All you need to do is go to system preferences->Notifications-> and scroll down to FaceTime. Look to the right of that and if your like me you uncheck the Badge App icon box and you should see that annoying red notification disappear.

Now I don't know if its a bug or a conflict with the new OS X El Capitan or other OS versions but this will fix that problem.

Why are we getting all of these iOS fixes when the Op clearly has a problem with a MacBook?

I have a (recently appeared) red dot on my FaceTime dock icon, but no missed calls at all showing when I open FaceTime. Most annoying.

Seems on mine that as I have phone calls synced between iPhone and iPad and if I miss a call the red symbol comes up on iPad FaceTime. Go to audio and delete or clear list. Red notification goes as well

SOLUTION that worked for me using MacBook Pro:

1. Open Launchpad.

2. Open System Preferences.

3. Open "Notifications" (for me, top row & furthest to the right).

4. Click on "Facetime."

5. Uncheck box labeled, "Badge app icon."

Should resolve the issue.

That would indeed clear the badge app icon, but it also turns it off permanently. I don't think the issue is that we don't want the badge app icon, its that we don't want the badge app icon that should not be there and there does not yet appear to be a straightforward way to deal with that.

I've been having the same problem as well. All you have to do is open Facetime from Docks, click and hold on the facetime logo and a set of options will appear. Select 'Quit' and that should remove the red dot.
