How can I limit the spell checking in Mail to what I have typed only? OS 10.7.2 Mail 5.1.

I have just migrated from years of using PC and this step has so far been painless and fairly smooth.

Various sources including this forum have also been of help.

I have an issue with mail however that I have not been able to find the solution to.

I have OS 10.7.2 and Mail version 5.1.

When I am sending out replies to an email the spell checker not only checks the spelling of my own text but goes on to check the spelling of everything in that email which could be a long string, including the various urls.

How can I limit the spell checking in Mail to what I have typed only?

I just found out that the spell checker starts at the point where you stop typing in mail.

So if you are responding to an email and you start the spell checker after you finished typing the checking will start from the beginning of the email you are responding to andnot your responce.

If the email has had numerous back and forth messages then it will go through all of them before it comes back to what you have just typed.

Simply putting the curser at the beginning of what you have just typed and clicking, forces the spell checker to start at that point, then when it gets to the end of it simply abandon the spell checking and hit send.

Definitely not a cure but a Band-Aid that is going to save me a lot of aggravation.

How do you abandon. In Windows, there would be a "send" button which would abort the spell check. I don't see that. I guess you could click the red x but that is hard to target and then you still have to click send.

Once again, another apple item that doesn't work as well as windows.. It would be nice if apple could actually incorporate some of the features of windows instead of just claiming to be better. Seems a bit arrogant.

Ths is clearly a case of Windows doing it better than Mac. As a returning Mac user (after a decade of PC world), I have to say I'm a little surprised that the software is not better, given Apple's reputation.

If anyone from Apple is listening, the Mail users on this page are asking for the following:

1) When we reply to someone else's message, we do not want the Mail spell-checker to waste our time spell-checking the reply as well. This is pretty basic.

2) Spell checking should not check URLs (actually, i think it's the grammar checker that does this). Once again, you're wasting our time.

3) There should be a way one-click method to abandon the spell check and send the email (currently, you have to kill the spell check and then send, or vice versa -- to clicks).

These are all features PC Outlook users are accustomed to, and it makes Mac Mail look bad in comparison.

Mac folks out there, if you know how to fix these problems, please speak up. But after reading this string, I'm pretty sure these are things we'll just have to live with.

Apple, I spent hours trying to find a way to spell check only my reply to an email without checking the prior emails that on the chain I am replying to. This is with "check before sending" enabled in Mail preferences. I hate the "check as I type" autocorrection, I only want to "check before sending", and I only want what I typed to get checked.

Jmatazzoni already speced exactly what you need to do:

Please address this ASAP.

Hey guys. I'm new here, but seems to have a solution for this:

When you finish your e-mail just double click Send icon and you don't have to close spell checker window.

Unfortunately, what I have found is that in Mail settings if you choose Check Spelling "When I send" it checks the entire document including errors in the original email string. The only way around is to Check Spelling "as I type" which I don't like as much, but at least it does not pick up the errors in previous emails. Not a great feature.
