Cannot play itunes hd .m4v purchases in Quicktime

All the HD .m4v movies I purchased from the iTunes store do not play in Quicktime for Windows 7.7.1. When I open the file there is just a gray screen in the Quicktime player window with no video or audio. However the player progress bar progresses as though it were playing properly.

The HD .m4v movies I purchased play fine in iTunes.

Any help would be appreciated.

If you got it from the itunes store, it has DRM that can only be "decoded" in iTunes. I am pretty sure that Quicktime cannot deal with DRM. This is why i never buy from the store and instead buy the disc and rip it to get rid of DRM. Apple needs to push for the removal of DRM from movies/TV shows like they did for music. DRM only ennoys legit users and pirates always find a way to defeat it.

Having the exact same problem. But, surprisingly, quicktime is able to play HD TV shows purchased on iTunes, just not HD movies.

Note: Quicktime Player is also *supposed* to play these videos -- as per Apple's own website. So it's a shame that Apple doesn't do what it says. Plus, the reason I prefer to use quicktime is that videos play rather choppily when played through iTunes, in spite of the fact that my PC far exceeds the requirements listed by iTunes. So, another case of Apple not doing what it says.

I used to rip some original DVD I had so I could play them in my iPad or my Mac mini (sometimes is easier than playing on a DVD set and helps to avoid scratches on the original disc). The HandBrake worked fine (even with .m4v extention), but since I've moved to Mountain Lion, quicktime refuses to play those files because "...a codec is not available...".

The funny thing is that Quicktime 7 and VLC in my Mac, and OPlayerHD, GPlayer and the iPad itself play the file without any problem.

So, I think that talking about protected files, DRM and playing only files purchased in iTunes (what is the big deal if you can play anywhere else) is very hard to believe.

I still believe it is a flaw in the QT Player

You can play the purchased FairPlay protected movies on ANY Mac or PC with the QuickTime Player. It only requires to install iTunes on it to enable this computer with your iTunes Store credentials to play your purchases. You can do this on 5 computers at one time. Don't forget to disable the computer via iTunes, if it's not needed anymore.

Matthias, since you are from outside USA, like me, is there any issue about QT Player displaying subtitles?

Asking you because since I've upgraded to Lion, besides not playing .m4v files, QT Player didn't recognize .srt subtitles files, even when I play .mp4 or .avi archives.

And for the record:

1 - I use the latest version of Perian

2 - Quicktime 7 and VLC play everything with subtitles (I may also turn them on and off)

Yes, iTunes movies do not always play on QuickTime - some play, some don't. This is really annoying if you like to purchase the movie not simply watch it on many free internet sites.

I bought "Who's afraid of Wirginia Woolf" which is a very old movie and paid Apple GBP 9.99, later I found it on retrofilms.in free to watch.

The problem is that audio laggs behing video and movies on iTunes are just un-watchable that's why I installed QuickTime. This is a common problem - many posts on this on Apple's forum, many answers like changing your computer set-up - come on, I'm not a computer expert, I just like to watch a movie without spending time on re-adjusting my computer.

Apple is losing customers in a very simple way - when customers want to avoid hassle and unreliable film sites and they buy and download moveis from iTunes. Then, customers spend lots of time trying to browse through forum posts and installing unreliable software that is supposed to cure the problem. By browsing the web they finally find a site with their film being shown for free, which gets them even more upset with Apple... sure way to lose target customers. This is just waste of money and time purchasing movies on iTunes - I'm really upset with the service offered.

Hi,

I know this thread is old but I read it as I was trying to see why "Quick Time Pro" on a Win 8.1 laptop did not see my .m4v files.

The video files were created using Quick Time Pro to export from the iMovie Mac OS X app....

I solved the problem by changing the file extension from .m4v to .mp4 and they all played fine in QT Pro on my Win 8.1 laptop...

Also, FYI, the .m4v file played video on my Sony Blue Ray player but denied the audio presentation. Once I made the above extension change the videos video and audio played nicely...
