Q: how do i print from an imac (lion) to a windows 7 shared printer?

I have been struggling to get my imac to print to a windows 7 (64bit) shared printer.  my other windows machines work just fine.   the imac finds it as a shared printer but then it just sticks at spooling with 82 bytes in the queue at the windows machine.   i have searched around and tried all the options suggested but have got no further.   Apple support wont help (its a new imac).

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

    You don't say how the printer is connected, without that vital piece of information it's really difficult to say what is going on.

    the printer is connected to the windows 7 machine via usb cable.  the windows machine and the imac are on a wired ethernet network conencted to the same switch.   firewall on the windows machine turned off.   other windows machines on the network can print to this printer.

    The problem is probably on the Windows side. We aren't Windows guys here so you need to see what the permissions are on the printer in Windows and see if it's setup for sharing. Also look on the Mac and check System Preferences - Sharing and see if printer sharing is turned on. Ideally the printer should be a true network printer directly connected to your router not a computer. Then all of your computers can share it. I would recommend looking over Printing Overview OS X Lion for hints though.

    At last after much searching (i see i am not alone !) i found the best solution to my problem;

    insert USB stick

    copy file to usb stick

    remove usb stick

    insert usb stick in windows 7 machine

    print file.

    crazy and stupid i know but i really cant be bothered trying to find another solution

    i had been led to believe apples just worked clearly not the case!

    no please dont tell me this is a windows issue as it is not!

    windows and linus machines print to the shared printer just fine.

    frustration has finally set and i have found another solution - a long usb cable

    when are apple in their infinite wisdom going to fix this stupidity?

    i cannot be the only one that wants to print to a shared printer on another operating system....or am i alone?
