Looks like you have Lion, so check that you have the Recovery HD:

In Terminal: diskutil list

If you see: Apple_Boot Recovery HD 650.0 MB disk0s3

Then:

  1. Backup to Time Machine or Clone
  2. Open Disk Utility
  3. Delete the ubuntu Partition
  4. Expand the Macintosh HD Partition
  5. ->Shut Down
  6. Boot into Recovery HD (Hold ⌘R on Boot)
  7. Select Disk Utility
  8. Erase Macintosh HD
  9. Quit Disk Utility
  10. Select Reinstall Mac OS X
  11. When prompted, select Transfer Data from a Time Machine or other Disc

What system was that machine originally shipped with? Did the Snow Leopard disk come with it? If you're getting kernel panics when booting from that disk, either you've got a hardware issue somewhere or it's not an appropriate disk for that machine. If the machine shipped with Snow Leopard or Lion, for example, a retail Snow Leopard disk won't have a new enough system. (Most machines that shipped with Snow Leopard require a newer version of Snow Leopard than what is on the retail disk.) In that case, you'll need to use the disk that came with the computer.

If it shipped with Lion, you don't need a disk, you just need recovery mode. Hold down command-R at startup until you see the Apple logo.

I read your post as indicating you wiped the OS X partition from the disk.

If that is the case then, given the date of the machine I don't think you have network recovery, you should check to see if the Recovery partition is still on the disk (depends on how you wiped out the OS X stuff when you installed Ubuntu) by doing as Thomas said hold command R while starting up.

If the recovery partition is still there you're home free, just follow the screen prompts. If it is not there then the only recourse you have is to get it to boot off the original SL install disks. At what point during the boot procedure with the SL disks does the machine panic? And as was asked above, these are the SL disks that shipped with your machine?

If I misread your post then follow the advice of the previous posters.
