I have a Mid 2010 MBP that I use in a vertical position (as it's connected to an external monitor). The problem with this is I can't use the remote as it won't pick it up because the IR receiver on the MBP is pointing towards the ceiling. So I was wondering if I were to get an external USB IR receiver whether this would work with the Apple Remote or not.
Any ideas or help would be much appreciated.

I got the external IR from the twisted melon site and it's not working for me so I'll have to write another question. Did you get yours to work and how?
SmartGUS receiver works fine.
