Q: iTunes could not backup iPhone because the iPhone disconnected

I've tried seaching for an answer for this problem and can't find one that works. I've tried the basics and even restored my iPhone 4S (and restarted it). Yet, I still keep getting the above message every time I try to back up even though my iPhone is hardwired to my laptop. Any other ideas out there to solve this one?

Thanks!

I tried that solution, didn't work for me. Own a built computer

    Tried USB 2.0 front port

USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 back ports. All same result. All start restoring and 5 min left then bam! iPhone disconnected.

Any chance that iZip is one of the applications in your restore?

It used to be, but I have long since deleted it way before my issue started.

It is weird, it'll sync/back up just fine. And when I wanted to restore from back up, I got the iPhone disconnected error.

But if you used to have it, the backup may still contain its data.

Try creating a new backup. To do that go to iTunes Preferences, Devices tab. Right click on the current backup and select "Archive". The next time you back up it will create a completely new one. The old one will still be available so you can go back to it if you can resolve the problem.

I wish I could try that but I don't have any of the data any more seeing as I made the switch from a 4S to a 5S. The only thing that's keeping me from losing 2 years of data is the one back up. My phone as it is has none of the information I need

I understand, but you have nothing to lose and knowledge to gain. If you can archive the old backup and preserve it, you are now free to do a test backup/restore of your new iOS. If the new backup/restore chokes too, it may not be the old backup file that is the problem. Conversely, if the backup/restore test works, you can be much more certain the problem is in the old (now archived) backup set itself.

Finally got home again to try this out, but I do not see where you can archive a back up...

I described how to Archive already, but I'll try again in more detail.

    1. Launch iTunes
    2. Open Preferences (I forget where it is on Windows, but it's somewhere in the menu)
    3. Click on "Devices"
    4. You should see a list of 1 or more backups
    5. Right click on the name of the most recent backup
    6. A floating menu will appear
    7. Select "Archive" from the floating menu
    8. Click "OK"

Pretty much the same in iTunes on the Mac too, go to iTunes Preferences> Devices > right click on backup in list > select "archive".  Then start another backup and it will create a second (new) backup in the devices list.  I just did it with my backup of my iPhone 4s on my Mac, I archived and then created a new backup.  Now I have two backups on my devices list for the same phone.

"Right click" brings up the delete or archive menu on my 10.8 mac w/ iTunes 11.1, and works on my son's iMac with 10.6 and iTunes 11.0.4?  Not sure why you would not get it?

could it be that indeed the back up is corrupt?  i'm just about to give up.  I literally dedicated a full day non-stop to getting my information back.  It is infuriating...

A last ditch effort (which you may have already tried) would be a permissions repair with Disk Utility.  If the file did not have the right read/write permissions, you would not be able to archive it. Can't hurt anything.

Have you tried a 3rd party tool like iTunes Backup Manager so you can at least get to and copy your data (like photos, sms and contacts etc.) out of the backup? You should be able to get a free trial to see that it works before deciding to buy.
