Q: iTunes could not backup iPhone because the iPhone disconnected

I've tried seaching for an answer for this problem and can't find one that works. I've tried the basics and even restored my iPhone 4S (and restarted it). Yet, I still keep getting the above message every time I try to back up even though my iPhone is hardwired to my laptop. Any other ideas out there to solve this one?

Thanks!

I'm having similar nightmares to some of you.

I'm using an iMac on Yosemite, with iTunes 12, IOS 8 on a 4s, all up to date.

The same 'disconnected' error code comes up no matter what I try right at the end of a sync / back up.

I have deleted all back ups through prefs in iTunes

I have turned off all WiFI

I am not using a Hub or USB 3

I have tried backing up to my Mac which I normally do

I have tired backing up the iCloud as an alternative option

I have tried a different cable to sync with that works on my wife's set up (same as me only Maverick / IOS 7 & iTunes 11)

I can not find the MobileSync folder (perhaps Yosemite has a different folder structure?) to change the back up file.

Any other ideas? I don't have a back up at all now

    Please Help

    Still no advice?

    Is it worth reinstalling iTunes?

Does anyone know where the missing MobileSync folder would be on Yosemite?

    Cheers

    Got a solution !

I was using a non genuine wire to connect from my computer USB to my iPod.

Replacing it with a genuine wire from Apple solved my disconnected problem and the backup worked!

Huge "Thank You" goes out to Lawrence Finch.

Like many others, I noticed that my iphone 5s had stopped syncing about a month ago. I am on a Windows 7 system. I renamed my backup folder as suggested and sync'd again. This time it went all the way through. One other thing I did,I also turned off my wireless on the phone and signed out of my iCloud account (I never use it anyway). and it sync'd flawlessly as others have mentioned. One last thing, my phone also automatically reattached me to the my wifi network but that's not a big deal.

    Thanks again Finch! =)

I to had the same problem when I download the latest version of iTunes onto my iPhone 6 and mac and Fnch you are a legend it now works when I changed the back up folder name to backup.sav. and followed Finch's directions as follows:

Assuming you have a Mac, launch Finder. From the Go menu choose "Go to folder" and paste

~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/ into the form. Include the full string including the tilde (~).

Just had this issue this morning and found your post.  Instead of renaming the folder, I just located the GUID folder name that matched the last time my iPhone was backed up.  Deleted that sub-folder and my backups started working again!

    Thank You!!

    Hi All,

Thanks for the various different approaches and ways by which you problem of the restoration got resolved.

I faced a similar issue, where I wanted to swipe a new iPhone4 with an old one.

    This solved my problem:

    1. Setup the iPhone as New.
    2. Restore the Backup

I've been having the "disconnected" pop-up message for a good 2 months now. I tried everything from using different USB hubs on my Mac to changing the USB cable time and time again. I made a backup to iCloud in the meantime, but I still wanted to be safe and have a backup of my iPhone locally on my Mac. I figured out a solution...

    1. Go into iTunes > Preferences > Devices.

    2. I selected the last, most recent backup from 2 months ago and deleted it.

    3. I then went back into iTunes and tried manually backing up again.

    4. It worked! No pop-up messages.

I thought I'd share my experience with an iPad 3 (first Retina iPad).

I tried deleting backups; no joy. Then renamed the entire iTunes directory to let it recreate it. No Joy!

Finally I swapped the cable I was using for one I thought was original. Joy! Everything worked as expected.

Where did I get the dodgy cable, which is useful only for charging? From Amazon; they are peddling lots of these as "Genuine OEM" and they are not. Lots of complaints over there.

Why did I buy from Amazon, and not Apple? Because Apple no longer sells the 30-pin cable necessary for my older iPad. That's unfortunate because it's very difficult to find a 30-pin cable that actually works.

    My two pence:

I have a Renesas USB 3, 4-port hub powered from an adapter (5v, 2a) -- devices show up just fine, even launch iTunes on connection, but further than that, no joy, not even charging!. With the typical laptop two USB port problem, I bought a PCExpress card, USB 3, 4-port which takes its power off of one of my two laptop ports -- now iPad/iPhone charging just fine, no issues with backups or syncs -- until a week ago. Suddenly I'm getting "...because iPad disconnected" error message.

So I read everything here and decided not to go through what everyone else did and just try the simplest fix -- plugged my iPad directly into the laptop port instead of the hub or PCExpress card.

Now all OK. I don't like it, but there you are.

    Hi Lawrence.

Can you help me with a stubborn problem backing up my 5s iPhone to my new iMac please, I'm pretty sure Ive tried just about everything, not able to copy my phone contents to Phoneview either, like iTunes it times out or eventually disconnects.

    Thanx.

Further to above - When I try to Backup or Sync my iPhone it disconnects after an hour or so with according error message, leaving me with a (useless) partial backup or nothing at all. My last successful backup was about 6 weeks ago, which Ive now deleted, I have 40GB of data on my 60GBphone, Ive reduced that 25GB by deleting apps, vids, music and have turned off contacts, email, and notes in iCloud on my phone.

Ive checked/tried the following to date:

iMac and iPhone software up to date

Reduced apps/data on phone to backup/sync

    Rebooted imac and iphone repeatedly

Tried using different usb cables, usb ports and wifi

Deleted all previous Backup files in Mobilesync

Tried backing-up copying data using Phoneview up but times-out after an hour with error message -51072 which says its taking too long and suggests I sync with iTunes first.

Downloaded and reinstalled latest iTunes app v 12.1.2.27

Only thing I haven’t tried is to change my iTunes media location from External HD to iMac, which I will do next..

Thanx in advance for any suggestions.

    Kiwimacguy
