Q: iTunes could not backup iPhone because the iPhone disconnected

I've tried seaching for an answer for this problem and can't find one that works. I've tried the basics and even restored my iPhone 4S (and restarted it). Yet, I still keep getting the above message every time I try to back up even though my iPhone is hardwired to my laptop. Any other ideas out there to solve this one?

Thanks!

Run a chkdsk FS repair scan from an Admin-level command prompt:

    chkdsk /r

    (enter)

Then run System File Checker from an Admin-level command prompt:

    sfc /scannow

    (enter)

Hi buggsy2, thanks for your suggestion.

Ive just tried both commands and get the same error message for each, command not found, see below. Very strange! Not sure what else to do..

    Admins-iMac:~ admin user$ chkdsk /r

    -bash: chkdsk: command not found

    Admins-iMac:~ admin user$ sfc /scannow

    -bash: sfc: command not found

The commands I supplied are for a Windows PC.

DId you try a genuine Apple cable? Amazon is peddling dozens of bogus cables which claim to be OEM but in fact are not, and carry the charge power but not the data reliable.

    Hi kiwimacguy,

I have been getting this error message for a couple of weeks now and finally took the bull by the horns and called for support.  In my case it was a corrupted iTunes library which was causing the problem.  By removing the iTunes property list files and two folders called iTunes and MobileSync from somewhere in the library, this forced iTunes to rebuild the library and solved the problem of the corrupted files.  Next backup attempt took a while (as it was backing up 70 Gb from scratch) but it worked.

Good luck with fixing the problem, it's pretty frustrating.

    APPLE AND SOMEONE PLS HELP!!

I have had this issue for months since my iPhone 6 and sitll persisting on iOS 8.3!!

Even tried differenct computers and cables, and I just bought a new MacBook pro and it still DOES NOT WORK.

Is this the best apple could do?! Recently I have had issues with iCloud Photo Library which has bascially messed up a large portion of my photos already and my phone still can't be backed up. This issue has been around for so long and Apple still hasn't done anything to address it....

I love apple products, but it's their negligence on these small but important issues that sometimes make me doubt whether iOS it the right choice or not.

I have to say that I am getting really upset that I can't get my phone to back up. I have to take my phone in for a replacement here in a couple of days and the fact that I can't back up my phone is really frustrating. I have tried everything. Swapped my usb cables from 4 different cables that I have all apple usb cables, deleted all backups both in iTunes and manually, completely uninstalled iTunes and re-installed and then re-synced. Even had it go thru the sync and in step 2 it will fully complete then it will give the disconnected error then turn around and start step 3 and 4 and sync apps etc... Anyone have anything that might work?

When I pull up my sync after uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling the sync says. Device Backup: Unknown 12/31/00 5:00pm

I've had the issue since just before I got my iPhone 6 - when I had my iPhone 5. I have it with both my iPhone 6 and iPad. I have tried rebuilding them from scratch (i.e. not restoring from backup). Thinking it might have been my computer I got a new Macbook Pro this week, rebuilt this from scratch except for iTunes (I just copied the iTunes folder across). Unfortnuately it hasn't fixed the problem. Clearly then it's not a hardware issue. The only thing I haven't tried is rebuilding my iTunes library but this is a lot of work and given others appear to have tried it without success I'm not sure what else to try. Clearly it only seems to be affecting a small number of users. Could it be a particular app that is causing the issue?

I changed the name of my iPhone under settings --> General --> About

Ejected the iphone and reconnected it making sure that iTunes is recognising that the iPhone using the new name

Backup setup completed successfully. Once I knew that was OK then I am happy to delete the older backups

Thank you so much!  Moving the USB cable to the back of the computer worked!
