Q: iTunes could not backup iPhone because the iPhone disconnected

I've tried seaching for an answer for this problem and can't find one that works. I've tried the basics and even restored my iPhone 4S (and restarted it). Yet, I still keep getting the above message every time I try to back up even though my iPhone is hardwired to my laptop. Any other ideas out there to solve this one?

Thanks!

This was the only tip that helped me. Have tried all other tips without success. Only when I saw this then set my wife's iphone 4S to Airplane mode to turn off all outputs did the Backup to my PC worked. Thanx MFuentes, even if this was a 3 yr old post.

Good day, this is really helping me out to backup back my iPod Touch 5th Gen after updated it to iOS 8.4.

I just delete the old backup and it works like a charm. thanks for the suggestion.

Thank you Lawrence!  Changing the name of the Backup folder worked for me after all the other methods didn't.  This was for an iPad rather than an iPhone, but same result!

Easiest fix is:  Put your iPhone/ipad into Airplane Mode, then restart the iPhone/ipad.  No need to delete old backups.

Much of the errors reported here kept happening (the "iPhone disconnected" error, the calendars not syncing, old calendars remaining in iTunes, calendars duplicated, etc., etc.).  I tried many of these solutions - none fully resolved it until I updated everything (which I had been reluctant to do) - iOS (iPhone 4s), MacOS, iTunes.  After that, everything worked fine.  No disconnect errors, calendars synced without dupes, and the old calendars in iTunes went away.

Here's my contribution to that never ending nightmare...

    • "Disconnect"-error on iPhone 4S (iOS 8.4) - no matter if connected via WiFi or via USB

    • Used to work both ways flawlessly until couple months ago

    • No such error on iPad Air 2 (iOS 8.4) - sync and backup both ways with no problems

    • Tried iPhone backup on two different Macs running Yosemite 10.10.4 and iTunes 12.2.1.16 (iMac Retina and MacBook Pro Retina) - same results

    • Deleted old backup (Dec 2014)

    • Managed to get a fresh backup (Yesterday 7.30 pm) after that (Rejoiced...)

    • Deleted stuff on the iPhone this morning, performed a normal Sync operation (including backup procedure) - "Disconnect" error was back

    • Archived the "Yesterday 7.30 pm"-backup

    • Successfully created another fresh backup (Today 1 pm)

    • Added two pieces of music to iTunes playlist and tried to sync with iPhone

    • Guess what...

    • Pulled out my old MBP Late 2008, installed a clean 10.10.4 and iTunes 12.2

    • Connected iPhone to USB port (USB 2.0 only on that machine)

    • Guess again...

It's in the iPhone or in the iOS 8.4, I'm sure.

I replaced the battery a couple weeks ago. Could it have something to do with that?!

    UPDATE

Apparently it's crucial to have the most recent updates of all your Apps installed. I used to skip those that only provide updates for use with the Apple Watch (which I don't have).

Since I updated these as well everything seems to be back to normal (for now...).

    Cheered too soon...

    Interesting time stamp, though.

II've had the problem for many months now. In that time I've gotten a new iPhone and a new computer. I rebuilt them both from scratch. The backup problem persists. I've narrowed it down to either something in my iTunes setup (I never rebuilt my iTunes) or down to one specific app that is causing the iphone to not backup. I have the problem with both my iPhone and iPad but my kids iPhones and iPads which I also backup to the same iTunes never have the issue. I suspect it's related to one specific app. For what it's worth I have found one guaranteed way to make it backup without error.

    1. Delete last backup from iTunes (by going to application support / mobilesync)

    2. Empty trash

    3. Restart computer

    4. Soft reset iPhone (hold home and power for 10 sec)

    5. Plug iPhone into computer and sync

IT backups up for me doing this every time but only the once and the next time I want to backup without error I repeat the above.

I think for the time being the way you do it is the only way.

Let's hope for a fix in iOS 9.

Unfortunately not good news. I'm running El Capitan and the iOS 9 public beta and the problem is still there.

Ouch!... So either the bug has been carried over to iOS 9 / El Capitan - or more apps like iZip are to blame. Happy searching... :-(
