cannot connect ipad to wep 64

I have a wifi only version of ipad 2. I'm trying to connect it to my home wifi which only supports WEP encryption. When I turn off WEP encryption on the router I'm able to connect the ipad with no problems. When I turn it on, the ipad doesn't like any pass code I enter. Naturally I would like to use the WEP encryption.

I'm able to connect to this same home wifi with WEP encrytion turned on with both my HP laptop and Motorola Photon Android phone. What's the deal with s ipad and WEP encrytption?

Thanks wiclee. I've been through this and a couple other kb articles. The router has the latest firmware. I'm able to connect to it with the ipad and WEP turned off. I'm able to connect to the router with my HP notebook and android phone with WEP turned ON. But not with the ipad. It tells me invalid password. I've typed it many times and verified that it is correct. I've even changed the WEP key in the router & ipad to ensure they both matched. No luck.

Have you tried these?

Check the wireless security option of your Wi-Fi router:

  • If you are using WEP security and have multiple WEP keys on your Wi-Fi router, try configuring your Wi-Fi router to use only a single WEP key in key index 1.

Disable 40MHz in the 2.4GHz settings on the Wi-Fi router. Mac computers, iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch do not support this mode. Disabling it may reduce interference issues.

Sometimes a Hard reset of your iPad may fixed the issue. SETTINGS/GENERAL/RESET/RESET ALL SETTINGS

Yes, I've check each of these:

1. Under security it only has WEP Mandatory or Disabled (it does allow changing from 64 bit to 128bit key, which I've also tried).

2. It requires 4 different keys to be entered and selection of the default key. The default key is set to 1. It does not allow me to clear the other keys (must have at least hex 00 00 00 00 00 for 64 bit).

3. No option for disabling 40MHz. I don't see this in any of the configuration screens.

4. I've done a hard reset of the ipad. No change.

Thanks again.

What brand is your router and model number, firmware version, if you don't mind?

iPad does not work well with WEP. When I got my iPad1 two years ago, i had so much problem with connection drops using WEP whilst my other Laptops and desktops were connecting without any issue. I had to eventually changed the encryption to WPA for it to work flawlessly.

My router is a Linksys WAP11, firmware 2.05.

I'm beginning to believe that I will need to replace it just to allow this thing to work. However, I've also seen some posts on here that indicate the ipad 2 doesn't play well with wireless N. I really only use this wireless now for my android and my kids laptops (both away at college) so I don't want to invest much into this. I've been looking at a Linksys WRT54GL which supports WPA/WPA2. I can still get one of these at a reasonable price but need to be sure it's going to work.

Thanks again for the help.

The posts about the iPad 2 and problems with wireless N are completely bogus. With almost 100 million iPads out there you will finds posts about problems with almost anything. By the way, unless you have an extremely fast ISP connection, there is really no need for an 802.11n router; a less expensive 802.11g router will do just as well.

I'd say it's time to junk that WEP-only router and get something that is up-to-date. Good routers can be had for ~$40 if you look around. By the way, WEP was deprecated by the WiFi Alliance way back in 2004 as being completely insecure. WPA2 is by far the best security out there.

Ya! Although you have the latest firmware update, the firmware was issued in 2005 which won't address the issues you have today. I guess you may have to upgrade to a new router which supports WPA/WPA2.

IPad 1 n 2 works well with Wireless N. WRT54GL is a G router and a bit dated. There should be lots of old model Linksys N available for a good price. But I leave up to you.
