Q: No memory left for App updates...

I have 5.0.1 on my Ipod Touch and it was quite full. I needed to update some Apps but I kept getting the message that there was not enough space so I deleted over 5Gb to make some space. I am still getting the same message to go and buy some space but there is sufficient space on the Ipod. The interesting thing is that it will still allow me to download further Apps without any problem at all. Is there an answer to this. I have already reset the Ipod to factory settings.

iPod touch, Windows 7

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...

Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.

If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."

Finally, if the Restore doesn't work, let the battery drain completely.  Then recharge for at least an hour and Restore again.

I went through all three procedures and it the problem is still there. If I try to update the Apps I get the following message

    "Cannot Download

There is not enough available storage to download these items. You can manage your storage in settings.

If I click on usage the ipod shows 3.6GB Available and 24.8GB used.

In the summary on the pc It shows Capacity as 28.36G divided into Audio 21GB, Video 0.63GB, Apps 2.8GB, Other 0.51GB and free 3.6GB.

    My Serial number is 9C940XXS6K2

There is something else I have noticed since I have had 5.0.1 is that keys on the ipod have to be touched several times to work. Before 5.0.1 all keys were very responsive to touch. Could this be anything to do with the problem.

I think I have given all the info I have at the moment.

Are there any other procedures I have to do?

For the original question go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup.  Form the error message it apears that yu ranout of iCloud storage, not storage on the iPod itself.

I am having trouble getting my head round this one. Turned on ICloud and in "Storage & Backup" it shows Total Storage as 5.0GB and Available as 4.9GB. If I touch "Manage Storage" I get my Ipod as showing 9.9MB. From my understanding with ICloud you get the first 5GB free. How could I have used 5GB when before I had no trouble when the Ipod was almost full. It clearly now is not full from only using 28.36GB out of the 32GB I had originally.

Am I correct or have I missed something somewhere along the line?

All I am trying to do, nothing else, is update the existing Apps I have on the IPod. I can put new music on. I can put new Videos on and I can put new Apps on. In fact I can put anything on it but it simply won't allow me to update the existing Apps already on there. Does that make any sense now?

Have you tried update the apps one at a time?  Do you know thefile size of the apps?  App update are still the complete app as for as I know.

That seems to have cured the problem. If I try and update all it won't do it but it will let me update individually. So will I have to do it this way in future or can it be corrected so that the "Update All" works?

This same thing happened to me and what I found is that one app that needed updating was purchased with a different appleID. Apparently that was what was hanging up the "update all" process for me. I deleted that app, and presto, update all worked great again. I found the error had actually nothing to do with lack of available storage as the error message stated.
