How to restore a CCC archive?

Hi,

today I made a big mistake: I wanted to make a "quick" backup of some directories on my external harddrive to my internal secondary disk (I have a SSD as system drive and the original HDD as a secondary drive mounted in an optibay instead of the original DVD drive).

I used CCC (carbon copy cloner) for the first time and I thought it would be a good and easy tool to use to backup files. What I did not understand is that CCC moves everything which was on the backup target volume to a folder named "_CCC Archive"!!

Unfortunately it moved all my user data into that new location! So when I logon now, I do not work under my "previous" user data (I made a softlink from /Users/ralf on the system drive to /Volumes/Data/Users/ralf)

My questions:

a) how was CCC able to move all my user data (>400 GByte) into the new location within 4 minutes when it takes 3 hours to copy everything from one place to another on the same HDD?

b) How can I restore my "old" system? I do have a backup with TimeCapsule. Problem: TimeCapsule thinks that I only have one big disk to restore everything onto - which I have not.

Can somebody help please? I am LOST!

CCC comes with built-in help. You can also get assistance through the forums at www.bombich.com.

thanks for the hint. I just posted my question there. Are you able to help me as well? I am really lost - I have a technical demonstration to deliver tomorrow and I need a fully working system by then (which is in 10 hours from now).

I have used CCC several times, most recently about 2 days ago, and never had anything like this happen.

It does not remove any data from the Source disk when copying/cloning to the target disk.

Not sure what you did to cause it to do what you describe.

Hi Shootist007,

CCC did NOT delete anything from the source disk, but moved EVERYTHING which was on the target disk to an archive - all my user data! Now I need to "undo" this and have my user data back to the original path. No data seems to be lost from the target drive - but moved to a different location.

I hope you understand my problem 🙂 I was dumb - no question. But I need to get this back to the original state. I am currently copying all data from the archive back to the original path - but this take hours to complete. Do not know if this is the right way to do it?

If I understand correctly, you cloned you SSD to your original internal HD. If so, all it did is move everything from /Volumes/Data/ to /Volumes/Data/_CCC Archive/. So you'll have to create a new softlink from /Users/ralf to the user's folder in the _CCC Archive folder.
