Converted previous e-book to iBooks format, fails when submitting

Just got thru converting an e-book I've written in Pages over to iBooks Author (it's up on Amazon in a standard e-pub format, but wanted a more multimedia version for the iPad in the iBooks store).

The book works great on my iPad when I sync it from the .ibooks file exported out of iBooks Author, but when I "deliver" it via iTunes Producer, it fails:

Odd, since this was created in iBooks Author, I'd think it would export a compliant file. Right?

The fail happens when I hit "deliver." It starts to check, but fails almost immediately. It does have M4V video files in it (the .iba file is 112MB), but they imported properly and play perfectly in the authoring environment.

Hitting "repair" under the filename generates an 'unable to repair' message.

Not sure what the error is in that cryptic message. The .iba file works great locally on my iPad.

I think, perhaps, Apple themselves aren't 100% ready to accept iBooks Author files. Even their "Book Proofer 1.1" won't check .iba files, only .epub files.

I submitted a regular .epub of my book for now. Should I figure my issue out later, can I "replace" the .epub with the new multimedia .iba version simply by "re-delivering" it via iTunes Producer?

Couple more questions:

1. Can I have a "regular" epub/iBooks book, and then have another "version" that was created in iBooks so long as they have different ISBNs?

2. If you can't re-deliver a book, how do you update it if errors are found after the initial submission? On Amazon, I just resubmit it and 10 hours later, it's updated on the store. Is the iBooks store similar, or are you done once you've submitted it?

1.) I suspect it depends on how the reviewers feel...if you appear to be cloning and spamming with same content but changed name, you may be at risk of rejection. Risk against that happening is your's to decide, if course.

2.) From: https://itunesconnect.apple.com/docs/UsingiTunesProducerPaidBooks.pdf

What elements can I update in my book?

You can update all publication details, except the ISBN number, for a book you previously delivered to the iBookstore.

That's not a very good policy.

Sort of like a printed book. You can't update it once it's published and printed.

Odd that Apple would adopt that old way of approaching books. The beauty of digital is it can be updated. But if Apple won't let you update your own work, then it's like a printed piece of work.

But then again, Apple will do what they want.

Got a response from Apple about my error above. Has something to do with a file not in the "manifest".

Where's this manifest? Why didn't iBooks Author create a complient package to upload?

Your ePub contains files not listed in the manifest. All files must be listed in the manifest, or there is no way to confirm that they are intended for distribution. Unmanifested file usually indicates a missing file or it is referencing a file which is not supported by iTunes.

What did you 'copy' from the old eBook to the new iBook? Plain text? Was it formatted text with included content? Maybe there was some media or other content that wasn't in the correct format and/or not copied across, and thus missing (== unmanifest)?? Just a guess. You may need to go back to the 'raw' text and other files if you didn't do that. From the title, I'm guessing you had plenty of media.

Jan 30, 2012 1:02 PM in response to David Bourne

I basically started from scratch. I just copied-and-pasted my paragraphs into the iBooks Author from Pages. I didn't do any automatic import.

And there were videos, but they weren't in the ePub file (in Pages) since that wasn't supported on the Kindle. So, all the videos were brought into iBooks Author new.

Is there anyway to tell from the error what file(s) are "missing"? This books works 100% on my iPad when I test it.

Is there a way to test the .ibooks file outside of the iTunes Producer? I seem to only encounter this when I go to "deliver" it. Since it works on my iPad, I had no idea it would fail during the delivering process in iTunes Producer.

Apple's own "Book Proofer 1.0.1" doesn't seems to support the iBooks Author file format currently.

Jan 30, 2012 1:14 PM in response to James Orlowski

The video format may not be correct for iBooks although I got an error when I tried to drop some wrong formatted files into iBook Author. I think it is more restrictive than the iPad. The error message isn't very helpful? Maybe you need to ask Apple again about how to determine the missing file. During the upload process when you get the error message it may be possible to click on 'some link' and see more details. At least that's what happened for me. My screenshots weren't the right size. I need to go back to the FAQ and check out best practice for media, image size and format, etc. for v2.
