Driverless eSata (NewerTech MAXPower 6G PCI eSATA Controller. 2 x eSATA ports)

Hello,

In my Mac Pro I have installed a NewerTech MAXPower 6G PCIe eSATA Controller. 2 x eSATA ports. This is to connect my external disk enclosure to the computer. The problem I am experiencing is that if the extermnal disk array is powered off during I boot my Mac or login to it after sleep - the external disks are not mounted. In order to get ones mounted to my Mac Pro I put my Mac to sleep, switch the external disk array on, wait until it boots and then wake up my Mac and login to the OS. Sometimes it requires more than one time to repeat it to get disks mounted.

Is there any way (terminal command, automator script etc...) to force a Mac to iniciate/activate or load drivers to the PCI eSATA Controller that I would be able to mount these disk without putting my Mac to sleep or taking any other special actions?

Thank you for your time.

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.2), 6Core 3.33GHz 24GB 4x3TB HDD+SSD

I had similar problems with that card which is why I returned it and got Sonnet Technology Tempo E2P. What was never clear was whether the problem was with the driver or the driver dealing my particular (OWC) enclosure.

Unless unloaded the driver (kext) should be always avaliable. So I don't believe there is anything you can do to solve this problem. It lies with the way it was coded and/or the firmware in the enclosure's bridge.

Thank you for reply.

But I guess, if having the external enclose powered on and waking Mac up from sleep, the Mac starts seeing the disks ... this makes me think that during the logon or wake-up process it goes trough some hardware check procedures which might be possible to repeat manually, or I am wrong?

Somewhere in the threads and emails and posts by FirmTek here, as well as over on AccelerateYourMac for oldies, the 'issue' seems to be .... "what firmware does your Mac Pro have" more than anything.

You could even - and be right - the issue is the cpu support and your 6-core 3.33 firmware is why.

My PCs I expect to get BIOS updates for new processor if possible, fix bugs, add support for more hardware. Apple leaves alone 3rd party and up to Newer etc to either go back to firmware and/or drivers to make those patches - if possible.

And that is why I think any new 2012 redesign etc (PCIe 3, new Lion firmware), there are going to be issues. Pretty much expect firmware updates to be posted in the 3-4 month period after a new model appears.

I really don't know but I suspect it is at the signal level from the enclosure bridge that somehow notifies the kext to interface with the card and vice versa. I don't know of know a way to directly signal the kext from a terminal command. You can unload the kext (kextunload) and reload the kext (kextload). Maybe that would be sufficient to get it to operate properly. But I'll leave that exercise to you.

I don't think the problem is with the NewerTech eSATA card. I have that card installed in the same Mac Pro you have and when I boot with the external drive powered down, when I power it up, it the external drive mounts. If I Eject the drive in Disk Utility, power it down, and power it back up, it reappears on the desktop and in Disk Utility. The drive enclosure is an older Mercury Elite-AL Pro and I suspect that X423424X is correct that it's the enclosure rather than the card.

Indeed, the card actually works more reliably than the Sonnet USB 3.0 card I'm also using, and that one needs and has its own driver.

Yes, but after you eject the drive and power it down, put your machine to sleep, then wake it up and power up the drive and see if it remounts. That was my situation and what I think the OP was describing. It definitely was my situation. The drive would not remount.

Actually it was the following:

OWC Mercury Elite Pro Quad eSATA/FW800/FW400/USB 2.0 Enclosure Kit - For 3.5" SATA Hard Drives

I use The ARCTICROC 4T http://www.rocstor.com/products/arcticroc-4t.html

grep for MaxPower returns nothing.

grep for AHCI returns 4 lines

com.apple.iokit.IOAHCIFamily (2.0.7) <5 4 3 1>

com.apple.driver.AppleAHCIPort (2.2.0) <34 9 5 4 3 1>

com.apple.iokit.IOAHCISerialATAPI (2.0.1) <43 34 5 4 3 1>

com.apple.iokit.IOAHCIBlockStorage (2.0.1) <34 12 5 4 3 1>

It is realy strange that putting Mac to sleep and waking it up forces external eSATA discs to appear. Most probably it is related to enclosure behaviors as the NewerTechnology Voyager connected to the second same card's eSATA port does not require any magic moves or actions to get mounted if a disk is inserted in to it.

This problem annoys me ..... especially when it is related to Microsoft Office. During MS Office activation the external eSATA disks were connected and Office included it in it's hardware description for authorization. Therefore if I run some MS Office products when the eSATA disks are off, the Office requests for a key. If I enter an activation key and next tiome I run MS Office with disk connected it sees it as a different computer and requests for a key....&^%*&^%

I talked to Microsoft about the problem and they told that they know it and working on solution. However, I believe that this problem priority is very low on MSoft side as there are comparably small amount of users having similar problems.

The OP was also describing the external being off when the Mac was booted and then powered on: "if the extermnal disk array is powered off during I boot my Mac or login to it after sleep..." I don't put my Mac to sleep so I can't comment on that part of it. But in my experience, the eSATA card can reliably mount the external when power is supplied to it and the Mac is running. OWC no longer sells my enclosure ( owcmefw934al1ks ); it has a quad interface, 2TB limit, and the very complex and nicely machined or cast slide-on cover rather than the current bent metal drop on cover.

I did some tests and found that if I have ext esata mounted, then exect it either Disk Utility or by right-clicking on disks and choose eject - I can mount ones back via Disk Utility. If I put mac to sleep while keeping external esata on - ones stay mounted. However, if I boot my Mac or wake it up from sleep with ext esata off - I need to power ext enclose on and then to go via one or another (boot or put sto sleep and wake it up) procedure.

More, I did kextstat in situation when Mac can see the disks and when it cannot - ten list remains identical. Therefore it seams all the drivers required are already loaded and just waiting for some signal from en external enclosure.

It seams it is the situation I have to live with 🙂

Back when first got the 6G card I wasn't going to fool around with trying to get it to work the way I wanted it to and OWC was kind enough to let me trade it in for the E2P (price adjustments of course). It behaves as expected.

Munas wrote:

That I don't understand. I downloaded the drivers from here. I looked at the kext that would be installed. It's name is MAXPower_eSATA_6G_RAID.kext and you should see that in /Sytem/Library/Extensions. It's bundle identifier is com.Newer.kext.MAXPower_eSATA_6G_RAID and that should be what's listed in a kextstat. So grepping the kextstat output for MaxPower should have shown it.

It may be we're talking about different eSATA cards. Mine, and perhaps the OP's ("driverless") is the Plain Jane version which doesn't offer or require additional drivers. Yours is the RAID card. My kextstat list didn't show anything either, but the card works.

I have not saved the box, but looking to the card pictures I think that I own http://www.newertech.com/products/pcieesata.php

and it has no drivers nor downloadable or on CD.
