Help figuring out what version iPod Touch I own

I am confused about which generation iPod touch I own. On the back cover it says its 8GB with the model number A1288 with a capacity of 6.83 GB, which both the iPod (it rounds it to 6.8 GB) and iTunes says 6.83. The serial number on the back cover matches what the iPod tells and what iTunes tells me.

What is confusing is that I noticed my iPod says its model is MC086LL which is generation 3, but according to Apple's website, the 2nd generation is A1288, and there was no 8 GB generation 3 ipod touches.

Can someone clear this up for me?

That is part of my confusion. I was refering to that page when I said Apple does not list a generation 3 8GB iPod touch and it says that A1288 is generation 2, but the model my iPod is telling me, from google lookup says it should be generation 3

I would trust the original source than Google.

What happens was that Apple released two different versions in the 2nd Gen 8GB iPod touch. the MB model and MC. technically the one you have would be considered 3rd gen, but it's classified in 2nd.

There is no 8 GB 3G iPod. When Apple released the 3G iPods (only 32 and 64 GB), Apple continued to sell the 8 GB 2G iPod with the same iOS version as the 3G. It is the hardware that determines the generation

So in other words, technically is a 3rd generation, but hardware wise its 2nd generation?

One of the reason I am tring to figure this out is because I am about to replace the digitizer screen and want to make sure I order the correct part/

You want a screen that is good for an 8 GB 2G iPod.

There is no 8 GB (or 16 GB) 3G iPod. Therefore technically there can be no 8 GB 3G iPod.

A 3G iPod with iOS 5 does not "technically" make it a 4G iPod.

That's not what I meant. In the same way that the black iPod 4G was released, and then the white one, it's the same situation with the 2nd Gen. Yes, you do need a screen for the 2nd Gen. Another thing, if you cannot add a picture to the home screen, for sure it's 2nd Gen.
