Q: I can't quit Safari and my screen has occasional jitters.  What's wrong?

My MacBook Pro has developed several symptoms which I am going to guess stem from Mother Board problems.

1  My screen over the last couple of days has spontaneously jittered (not flashed) then the computer crashed.  I could move the cursor but nothing else.  I had to force a restart.

2  I tried to shut down but now I can't quit Safari.

3  I have 10 dark plumes coming out of the bottom of my screen evenly spaced.

Mother board failure or something else?  What would be the best course of action?  I am going to force quit again and see if I can get rid of the plumes.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

I have seen several other people with the exact issue as you that have said a Lion upgrade fixed the issue. There is an apple support page about it that suggests an upgrade to Snow Leopard would fix the problem, although I have run across several people who said that was not the case.

Thank you Andrew.  That solved my dark plumes problem.  I finally got hold of my son who is very good at computer problems and he suggested that I shut down, remove my battery and disconnect the power supply.  Leave it like that for 20 mins or more.  Apparently the condensers sometimes get overcharged and cause strange little problems and that can fix them.

I have tried that and so far it is working like it did when it was new.  I will work with it for a few days and report back.

It does seem like the dark plumes was a separate issue which you solved.

    Thank again
