iPhone keypad - needs to stay on

How do I *KEEP* the iPhone's keypad on during a call, so I can use phone menus? I've pressed the keypad icon. The keypad stays on a few seconds and then disappears into power saving mode. But when you call a company and need to use their phone menu tree, you often need to enter several choices or a phone number or other information. I can't find how to keep the keypad active. This is annoying and a basic phone feature. You'd think it would be easy.

This is so annoying that I wish the iPhone had a physical keypad. I suppose then it would be a flip phone... or a communicator. /:-)

Is the iPhone 4s any better at it?

I personnally never experienced that. The keypad stays, unless I put it on my ear, where it disappear, but as soon as i take it back the keypad is there again... I'm currently having a phone call to test and nothing happens, it just stays on.

I have a 4s. I don't know if others can share to know if it's a 3Gs thing or not.

Spoke too soon, it does disappear after quite a while (2 minutes without touching it) but then I just press on home and it comes back, no screenlock or anything, the keypad straight away.

No, sorry, the screen turns off entirely after only a second or two, not several minutes, and there are no icons or touch available until or unless it blinks on again. Pressing the physical button (Home) doesn't do anything, as far as I can tell.
