AirPort Utility 5.6 vs. 6.0

Could someone explain the differences between the 2 different versions of the Airport Utility updates for Lion posted today on Apple's support website? Version 5.6 can be found here and version 6.0 can be found here. The descriptions are quite different and my Software Update app shows only v.6.0. When I first manually installed the dmg for v.5.6 (to keep the versions in incremental order), it installed it besides my previous AirPort Utility (v.5.5.3) and named it 'AirPort Utility 5.6', quite an unusual behaviour for a Mac OS X component. Then, when I updated via Software Update, as expected, the 6.0 updated the 5.5.3 but the 5.6 remains next to it.

Does the 6.0 includes all the bug fixes of the 5.6 and can I put 5.6 in the trash without any problem? I did not update my AirPort Extreme and Express firmwares to v.7.6.1 yet as I am confused with the Airport Utility separate updates.

5.6 is for Macs running Lion to administer older 'b/g" AirPort devices. If you don't have any older "b/g" AirPorts, no need to install this software.

6.0 is for Macs running Lion to administer newer "n" devices.

7.6.1 is for "n" devices.

If you have both "b/g" and "n" Apple routers, you will have to keep both versions on your Mac and choose the one that you need at the time.

How about advenced section in 5.6 which allow you to manage IP6, syslog, snmp and get information regarding who connected to you airport and it's performance?

I prefer to use 5.6 because it provide more advenced futures. I have Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station

(MD031LL/A)

Version of Airport utilities should chosen regarding your needs and your level of network understanding.

Hello,

I need Airport Utilities 5.6 or 5.6.1 for Mountain Lion, and when i tried to install it, both versions it said uncompatible with this software ... Any idea ? except manual extracting the software ?

Is there an Airport utilities 5.6 for Mountain Lion (all except 6.0) - I need all the functions Apple removed in 6.0

Thanks for answer

One one machine, I simply copied the AirPort Utility 5.6 file over from another drive to the Applications folder in Mountain Lion. Runs just fine.

On the other machine, AirPort Utility was already installed under Lion, and it remained fine on the Mountain Lion update.

Haven't tried a file extractor program yet, but imagine that it would work as well.

A few summary points to help folks getting buried in this long thread:

1) It's not clear whether Apple is discontinuing the v5.6.x line of the Airport Utility. What we do know is that the documentation for it is terrible and that Apple hasn't bothered to update the installer for OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, at this point anyway. IMHO Apple would be mobbed with bad feedback if the 5.6.x line was killed because the v6.0 line does NOT offer full functionality, not at this point.

2) Versions 5.6 and 5.6.1 are essentially identical, despite the differences in the installers and lousy documentation. They both work fine on OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.

3) The best way to work around all the installer nonsense is to:

- a) Download the installer package.

- b) Crack open the installer package with the shareware utility Pacifist. Dig around inside the installer and drag out the actual application. Use it.

I'm successfully running both v5.6 and v6.1 on OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.
