Yes! When I bought the iPhone 3GS from Sherway Gardens the Rep installed the SIM since my LG phone did not have one. However, when I was activating the phone I asked the Rep that if I can use this phone with any service provider (even abroad) and he told me that this device is unlocked and all I need to do is replace the SIM card. That was the whole point of buying an iPhone 3GS at retail price of $549. If I had to be Locked in with a service provider, I would have paid $199 at the time and signed up for a 3-Year contract. Unfortunately, I never bothered testing the phone until last week when I realized inserting a Rogers SIM and it did not work and it only occured to me recently because I am considering changing my service provider from Bell.
I called Apple at Sherway Gardens and the person told me to make an appoinment with a Genius, so I made the appointment at another store since Sherway is not close to my home.
Apple claims that their phones are not Locked with a servicer provider and I just re-confirmed with the person who I called at Apple at Sherway Gardens. So I suspect the phone they gave me was a Locked phone with Bell to begin with.
By the way, I also read at another thread that Apple introduced a software update for the iPhones that Locked the phones to their service provider. Is this a valid statement? Can someone please confirm if you have heard anything in this regard?
Thanks for your time.
I appreciate your feedback.
