"Find My iPhone" Does it work if...

The theif turns the phone off?

The theif restores the phone?

The theif puts the phone in Airplane Mode?

Just read an interesting article in the NYT which got me thinking.

  1. install and setup "find my iPhone"
  2. setup and enable restrictions (restrict app deletion, restrict setting changes to location services)
  3. this ensures find my iPhone runs on your phone without being removed
  4. turn off the location icon on the status bar for system services (it includes find my iPhone) so when you're tracking a phone, the thief doesn't get so wary as they may not know of the tracker.
  5. go to www.icloud.com, test that sneaky locator
  6. Keep your passcode on, not all thieves will think of switching it off right away

Edit: btw upgrade to iOS 5 if u desire, find my iphone is an integral part of iOS5. Since it will still be in location services even after deletion, you may want to test if solely just locking change of location service settings will secure it.

These r tips u can use to cover some vulnerabilities of the app. Of course what the others say are true.

funny because it if thief - question though lets say if someone stole it, or is in possesion of the phone on the iCloud website it says the messages (if u wish to send one) or request for locking phone will be sent when this iPhone connects to the internet- does that mean cellular servise needs to be activated (I disconected my number to prevent the person from calling on my number) or could it mean when someone connects via wi-fi? please help!

No, it is not, Find my iPhone is part of iCloud services and is activated by creating an iCloud account and enabling the setting under that account's settings. Even with iOS 5, if you do not create an iCloud account, you have no option to enable find my iphone.
