QuickTime Player Problem with iWeb v3.0.4 and Safari v5.1.2

iWeb v3.0.4 published web site with Safari v5.1.2:

I'm in the process of creating a web site (www.koinonia.com) using iWeb v3.0.4. There is an inserted QuickTime element on the home page which is playing an mp3 music file. The QuickTime player (Show movie controller option in iWeb) does not work with Safari v5.1.2 (but does work fine with Firefox v9.0.1). There should be a Movie Controller below the album jpeg image, but is not there with Safari. Also, the movie (mp3 audio file) does not play automatically (plays fine with Firefox). This looks to be a bug with Apple's iWeb / Safari applications.

Does anyone know how to get the QuickTime element to play with Safari v5.1.2?

Thanks

Mac OS X (10.6.8)

The URL is in the original post.

I deleted the entire site and published it again with iWeb v3.0.4. The QuickTime player fails to load and play with Safari v5.1.2, and works fine with Firefox v9.0.1. Safari shows a small "?" (question mark) in place of the QuickTime Controller/Player. Very strange. I would expect Apple applications to work together with no issues.

All the code is automatically generated and published by iWeb v3.0.4.

Your page and QuickTime file work fine for me in Safari 5.1.2. Here is your link to the .mp3 file:

I removed the hyphen - and I still get the same error only with Safari v5.1.2 (still works fine with Firefox v 9.0.1). If I go to the mp3 file directly, it plays just fine.

I think there may be Safari-Firefox browser interaction going on. Possibly with the generated JavaScript (Home.js). When I open the site with Firefox v9.0.1 it passes in Firefox, and now also passes in Safari as long as I keep Firefox open. When I Quit Firefox, Safari now goes back to failing the QuickTime player element on the home page (http://www.koinonia.com). This is very strange.

I published the whole koinonia.com site to disk/folder. The resulting site.zip file may be downloaded at:

Please feel free to demo it on your web server.

To make things even more strange. When I open the site from my local disk in Safari everything works just fine. The home page only fails when viewed/loaded on the Apple MobileMe web server with Safari and Firfeox closed. As soon as I view the page in Firefox on the web server, it starts passing in Safari. I then quit Firefox, now goes back to failing in Safari.

The MP3 file is the problem - or rather its source. Did you import it from iTunes via the media browser? This is a known issue with iWeb, iTunes and Safari which was discussed at length in this forum a while back.

I converted your file to .mp4 and loaded it into iWeb from the Finder. Here's a test page with your MP3 at the top and the MP4 below it....

I detest iTunes and never use it. It probably adds something to the meta data of the MP3 file. If you really want to use this file, or find out the problem, you could open it in an audio editing app and remove the meta data to see if that makes any difference. Then stay away from iTunes!

Safari 5 running in Snow Leopard has been a problem for me. It screws up html, loads a distorted control bar in HTML5 and crashes every now and again when I do a Google search. Reporting these issues is a waste of time as the latest update had no fix. I test all my pages in Firefox and Chrome and don't bother much with Safari since less than 3% use it.

I have the same issue as the OP. The file will only load in Safari if the page is open in Firefox at the same time.

This problem arose over a year ago and is related to files imported from iTunes via the media browser. If the OP will confirm that the file came from iTunes, I will have a look at the meta data to see if there's anything there that iTunes has added.

The only time I am forced to use iTunes is for apps that don't allow import from the finder such as certain situations in Keynote. Otherwise, I wish it would disappear down a black hole in the universe along with Windows and Internet Explorer.

I converted the file to MP4 with QT Pro to prove the point that its the actual MP3 file that is causing the problem - along with Safari.

I haven't depended on the QT Plugin for playing media for quite some time now. HTML5 now works in all modern browsers and should also work in IE 8 if the HTML5 Shiv is included in the head of the page.

Its also a breeze to get flexible movies in responsive web design using HTML 5...

I don't bother too much with flash fallback anymore since these designs are mainly for mobile devices and I can ignore those who are reluctant to upgrade their out of date browsers.

Thank you for all your input - it is quite helpful. It's good (I guess) to see that you repeated the problem I was having. Not good for Apple with iWeb, Safari and iTunes.

The original MP3 file was dropped into iWeb from the Finder (not through iTunes using the Media Browser). The MP3 file was created from a Wave 16-bit/44.1KHz CD master using BIAS Peak Pro 6 (high-end mastering software). However, I did manually add the ID3v1.0 and ID3v2.2.0 meta data tags using Media Rage app which is far more detailed than the ID3 data available with iTunes. I see now what is causing the problem.

I will create a test page to verify for both MP3 and MP4 with and without meta data to confirm this is the problem I've been experiencing.

Thanks again.

I use Bias Peak to process files after mixdown and add the meta data to the MP3 versions with it. I haven't experienced any problems.

Nowadays you can get away with using HTML5 to play audio. Fallback to flash is only required for out of date browsers. Mediaelement is good and presents a uniform control bar in all browsers...

Here is the simple test page to verify how MP3 & MP4 audio files with and without meta tag data interacts with iWeb published HTML and Safari.

http://www.koinonia.com/MetaTest/

After verifying the same original problem (fails with Safari for MP3 with ID3 meta tag data), I upgraded Firefox to v10.0 and now after viewing in Firefox v10.0 and quitting Firefox, all four now pass in Safari. I'm not sure why the results vary. QuickTimeKirk never experienced the problem with Safari v5.1.2.
