"Airport can't be installed on this disk"; why?

I get this above error message when I try to load my Airport Express disk into my Mac Book Pro - running Lion... The message goes on to say: The version of Mac OS X on this volume is not supported". I bought the express some time ago but never loaded it; do I need to get a newer version and if so, can I download it?
