Q: airport utility install fails

I've tried to install airport utility 6.0 through software update and it continually fails.  The process has bricked the installed airport utility 5.6.  I've gone to apple's support site and downloaded both installer packages and both fail as well.

Any suggestions?

Same issues as everyone else above.  Tried creating a new admin account in OSX Lion, and was able to get the installer to complete.  However, everytime I try to open Airport Utility it crashes immediately with no error log, and if I check the version info it indicates that it is still running version 5.5.3.

Hoping there is a solution soon.

On the other hand I have been able to update my Airport Extreme by using the Airport Utility app on my iPhone, so at least that worked.

For those concerned: Note that Airport Utility v6.0 is ONLY for Mac OS X 10.7.2 LION (or 10.7.3, just out today).

Airport Utility v6.0 isn't going to work on any earlier version of Mac OS X. Version 5.6 should work fine.

OOPS! Airport Utility v5.6 is also ONLY for 10.7 Lion.

Thanks for pointing this out, but I think everyone here is up to date on Lion or at least running 10.7.2.  It seems that we have all been trying to run software update to access any update to Airport Utility and have been met with repeated failures during the install process.  It seems to be much less of a "not running the right software version" as it is a "the Airport Utility doesn't seem to finish installing" issue.  Also, after trying to run the installer, it corrupts our current version of Airport utility (5.5.3 or 5.6) so that we can't even access the software that was working correctly before the failed update.  The only work around so far, has been to delete Airport Utility completely and to re-install a version that is not Airport Utility v6.0.

    Latest and Greatest

Ok I updated to Lion 10.7.3 and attempted to update Airport Utility and yet again the installer failed. I tried both v.5.6 and v6.0 with no success...the only version that will load correctly is v5.3. Based on the latest attempt one can say without any doubt that the installers are seriously flawed and need to be looked at.

    C'mon Apple fix this....

Same problem with Airport Utility 6.0  Will not install.

Also, Time Machine only backs up a few things and support cannot help.

Only machines in office that are reliable are those running Windows XP Professional.

This Mac is the least reliable.  Not like the mythology at all.

Further to my previous post, I have just returned home and updated my Mac Pro with the Airport Utility update and the Lion Update and both worked perfectly. So, it is only on my Macbook do I have the problem for some reason

I have the same problem too I get the installation failed message every time I try to install it or 'unknown error". I even tried again after upgrading to OSX 10.7.3 but still the same "installation failed" message. I have a MacBook Air late 2011.

Hi all...same here! Thought I was in an invisible minority...had to download AU 5.3.3 from Apple Downloads...trash what was left of it after attempts to install version 6 (I needed to use Trash It! as Airport utility is  "an essential part of OS X") and then restarted....THEN reinstalled 5.3.3 which now works fine....

It seems as far as I can see (and comparing my 2011 iMac here with my backup disk) that the version 6 installer (in all of our cases on the forum here) seems to remove certain airport components and/or hidden files without replacing them so that when the last phase of installation happens (moving items into place and restarting the installed app) the essential bits aren't there

This installer is duff for some people and not ready for prime time.

Still, on a good note, 5.3.3 seems much beter anyway....

Same here - worked fine on the MB Air but failed and bricked the existing app on the iMac.

    Have reverted to 5.5.3

Same here. 2007 MacBook with 10.7.3 and new Mac Mini Server 10.7.3.

..and actually the now old utility installed on my machines 5.5.3, won't even open on my machines because it's not meant for 10.7.3.

You might want to consider downloading and installing the correct AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion , which will provide much more functionality than AirPort Utility 6.0.

You can keep both 6.0 and 5.6 on your Mac (you cannot delete 6.0) and use the one that you want.

5.6 doesn't work on the new 10.7.3. I get installation failed with 6.0 & 5.6. I can only install 5.5.3. And even still, 5.5.3 failes to open after it's installed and opened once.

I too am experiencing this same problem. I tried using Software Updater to update Lion to 7.3 and Airport Utility to 6.0. Each time I tried, the updates failed. I finally downloaded them both separately from Apple's site and was able to update Lion but the Airport Utility still fails. My older version in the Utilities folder will not open now.

Sorry, but I cannot duplicate this. Until l can, I can't offer a solution.
