Q: airport utility install fails

I've tried to install airport utility 6.0 through software update and it continually fails.  The process has bricked the installed airport utility 5.6.  I've gone to apple's support site and downloaded both installer packages and both fail as well.

Any suggestions?

WOW. Have been a MAC user since 1984. MAC OS X rocked (past tense, snowleopard was cool.) Then came lion. Airport updates that have me tearing my hair out (not much left if you can guess my age.) BUT to read this blog, since when has MAC become like a windows PC; reinstall from scratch! OH OH Steve jobs is dead and I feel that he is not watching my software. OK so apple is worth gazziolions, but if this is the beginning of the post jobs era, we are in for a fast descent.

I reinstalled airport utility 5.6, then reinstalled the version 5.. on my time capsule and my express and it all works. My oh my I wish it would be easy to go back to 10.6

Apple is actually a head of the game. IP v4 numbers are running out probably by June. Apple is making everyone IPv 6 ready.

If Airport Utility 6.0 update continues to fail try re-installing OSX. This was the only solution for me.

I ended up download the new Airport Utility as just a download from Apple (I think) and installed it on another drive. I named it Airport Utility Copy and then moved it to my Lion drive where it works fine. I still have the old Airport Utility also.

    hi,

i had the same issue on my girlfriend's 2011 iMac. also, i just fixed it with a stupid-easy work around...

every time i tried to open Airport Utility on the iMac, it would just crash - no errors or anything. If i tried to update it through Software Update, the update would fail. If i downloaded Airport Utility 6.0 update from Apple's website, the install wouldn't complete.

i tried to delete Airport Utility from my Apps->Utilities folder. I got a message saying that "Airport Utility can't be modified or deleted because it's required by Mac OS X". Couldn't delete it.

So here's how i fixed it:

    1) i already had Airport Utility 6.0 installed on my MacBook running Lion. I went to Apps->Utilities on my MacBook, and right-clicked on Airport Utility, and hit "Show Package Contents". I copied the entire "Contents" subfolder onto my desktop, and then transferred it onto the desktop of the iMac.

    2) i went to Apps->Utilities on the iMac. RIght-clicked on Airport Utilities, Show Package Contents. Then, i threw away all the items inside the "Contents" folder. It asked for my admin password, and then it let me throw it all in the trash.

    3) i dropped everything from the MacBook's Airport Utility->Contents folder into the now-empty Contents folder of the iMac. it asked me to authenticate with my Admin password. I did, and then everything copied in.

    4) took a deep breath, and then double clicked on Airport Utility. Totally works now.

It feels awesome when you can run Software Update again, and there isn't something lingering in Software Update, mocking you because it won't complete...

Hope that helps somebody - this has been ******* me off for the past month...

This was absolutely brilliant mate!  This solved my issue.  I know many of you won't have another mac, but all you need is a friends! This was the first pain in the rump I could not sove on a mac.  I didn't think of just replacing the contents!

I was still having the problem.  Perhaps I should have tried installing 6.1 first - might have worked.

Instead I "rIght-clicked on Airport Utilities, Show Package Contents. Then, i threw away all the items inside the "Contents" folder. It asked for my admin password, and then it let me throw it all in the trash."

After that 6.1 installed perfectly.  Then re-installed 5.6.  Both work great - no more Software Update hassles (I hope).
