Cannot connect to a network printer at work; can someone help?

I recently purchased a MBP, and I really like it, but for some reason, I am having trouble with routine tasks. The problem that is vexing me right now is that I cannot connect to the network printer at work.


At work, we are all connected via WI-FI, and I have never had a problem logging into the network and using all of the applications that are made available to us. However, when I went to add the printer I have used for four years, I could not make it work. Here is what I have done so far:


I tried to find the printer in the Print and Scan window of System Preferences, but it never showed up. So, I tried to add it. I clicked on the IP icon in the menu bar, and I selected IPP. I entered the printer name, and received the message that it was an invalid address. To fix this, I walked down the hall to the printer, found its IP address, and entered it into the proper field in System Preferences. I then recevied the message that the address was valid. So, I tried to print a test page. No luck.


I then went to the Xerox website and downloaded all of the recent drivers for the WorkCentre 5665 and installed them. I selected the drivers from the Print Using drop-down menu. Still no luck.


So, I am now looking at the Print and Scan dialog box on my old computer, and I am looking at the printer's information that I am trying to set up on my new one. But, I am not sure what I should be looking for. Can anyone help me with this?

Sorry to tell you but this is a real problem with Mac OS X.

Apple suggests that the printer be connected to the computer Via USB port while installing it.

Yes you heard me right.

From that article.


If the printer is a wireless capable printer and it is connecting to a wireless network, make sure it is properly connected to the wireless network first. The printer may have to be connected to the Mac initially via USB.


Although it states that if the printer has wireless capabilities but it really doesn't matter if it does or doesn't. If it is a networked printer you may still have problems connecting to it
