Q: I keep getting the message "time machine is unable to get status of backup disk" and the backup fails.  What do I do?

My Time Machine stopped doing back-ups.  I get the message "unable to get status of backup disk"  I have my macbook connected to a WD external drive.

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
