iTunes 10.5.3.3 cannot see iPhone 3GS

I

have a serious problem which seems, looking at the web to be quite common. I am running iTunes 10.5.3.3 and want to sync my iPhone 3GS. iTunes seems totally unable to connect to the iPhone even after checking that Windows 7 x64 sees the 'Apple Mobile Device USB Driver' and that this is the latest version. I have attached snips taken of the various screens:

At the time my iPhone was connected to the laptop and charging happily.

I have uninstalled/re-installed iTunes so many times that I seriously wonder how it was ever let out, it sometimes works, sometimes not mostly not. If it does work ejecting the iPhone, shutting down iTunes and rebotting the laptop causes it to cease detecting the iPhone.

Is there any cure for this???????????????????????????????

The phone works great but it is obvious that iTunes from v7 to v10 has serious problems with Windows 7 that should have been sorted by now. Even more annoying is the fact that it is impossible to do anything like backup without iTunes, so if anyone knows a better software package that CAN see an iPhone, please let us know.

This certainly does not give Apple my vote of confidence and I'm sure that of numerous others. Come on Apple, Windows 7 has been out for over a year so you have had more than enough time to sort out why Windows sees an iPhone as a camera (format incompatability, images can be seen if the iPhone is seen as a camera so must assume that these use FAT?)!

Have uninstalled then re-installed iTunes and it sees my iPhone but doesn't show the battery state.

I have rebooted my laptop and, guess what, iPhone is now NOTseen! Who designed this software, an idiot? Oh, I forgot Apple programmers don't know anything about Windows especially Windows 7. I still think this has to do with the differing formats as if there are pictures on the iPhone, Windows sees it as a camera and it is possible to see the pictures in Explorer, so these must be stored in FAT format. Maybe someone needs to design the phone to tell Windows that it's a phone and tells Windows to load the correct drivers. Maybe that's too difficult!
