Can't get iPod out of disk mode, nor restore it

I have an old iPod (special edition U2) that’s been dwelling in a drawer since I got my iPhone (more or less two years). I recently changed it to disk mode because I needed to transfer a large amount of documents and latter decided to give it away (iPhone holds more songs). The problem is that now I can’t get it out of disk mode; I have tried restoring it as indicated here (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320?viewlocale=en_US), without success. When I connect it to a MacBook iTunes won’t see it and Finder shows it as a mountable disk, a PC will show it in iTunes and even tell me to restore it but when I click “restore” I get an error message telling me that iTunes can’t connect to the update server. Additionally, when I restore it manually I get an image of a folder and an exclamation sign.

Any ideas, other than have recycled or using it as paper weight?

iPod classic, Mac OS X (10.5.8), Won't work on XP either

To get out of Disk Mode, you can do the iPod Hard Reset

  1. Toggle the hold switch, make sure you cant see the red mark
  2. Press the Menu and Center Button simultaneously for about 10 secs, till the Apple logo comes ON.
  3. Then release the buttons and select your Preferred Language.
