Feb 15, 2012 1:39 PM in response to MShiresby chirpie,I'd like to know the answer as well. I know there's a surround sound bug on the mini for screwing up the audio channels (IE the center channel shows up on the surround left and visa versa) so I'd be surprised if this worked perfectly.

Feb 15, 2012 2:10 PM in response to MShiresby stuckfootage,★HelpfulLaunch
/Applications/Utilities/Audio MIDI Setup and select "Configure Speakers…"
to configure your computer's sound output channels, and FCX will use that.

Feb 15, 2012 2:15 PM in response to stuckfootageby Carl Spackler,★HelpfulFor grins I called Apple sales support for FCP about this. I specificially asked if you'd need an external card to monitor surround. They guy I spoke to did say that it would output 5.1 or 7.1, though you'd want to run it through a receiver. However, I'd take this confirmation at your own risk.

Feb 15, 2012 3:13 PM in response to stuckfootageby MShires,This is all very helpful. I don't doubt the Mini outputs surround sound through HDMI. The issue is will FCP X output the several discreet channels while mixing in surround sound mode through HDMI. Soundtrack Pro will output stereo channels through the various outputs on the computer. But STP will ONLY output surround sound via Firewire going into an interface such as Audissey or Focusrite, thus my question here.

Jan 5, 2013 7:08 AM in response to MShiresby Haggardly,I'm running FCPX on a Mac Mini running OS X Mountain Lion connected to a Sony receiver through HDMI and can confirm that sound is being output on the rear channels during playback. The receiver is reporting it as L-PCM so your receiver probably needs to support 6 channel L-PCM over HDMI. I don't think FCPX is going to compress it to AC3 or DTS on the fly for you.
