why is there no sound from macbook pro?
All of a sudden there is no sound anymore? Is there a fix for this, or do I return the computer (what a pain) its only 6 months old!

Have you gone to system preferences, click on sound, and make sure the volume is all the way down, or the mute box is clicked?
Is the problem with the internal speakers or with headphones, or both? Is the speaker icon on the menu bar greyed out? Is it greyed out when you use internal speakers or headphones, or both?
is there no sound in the headphones and speakers?
Thanks for your kind replies. No sound from internal or speakers (there is the normal start up sound). The 'sound' window shows 'selected sound output device' with a drop down menu, but no options. None of the functions in this window are selectable, i cannot change the sound level or mute. On output, no output devices found, same for input. I have plugged in external speakers. , nothing. The machine is also running super slow. It took 3 minutes to boot. It has done this suddenly, I have not touched anything.
Log in with the Guest account. Do you still have the problem there? This will determine if it's a system problem or just local to your account. I suspect the latter if you're getting the start-up sound, but let's check.
Guest account, I tried, thanks for the tip, but under accounts the guest account is greyed out, and I can't seem to wake it up.
firsrt you have to click te pad lock and enter your admin password, then you will have access to the guest acct
You need to log-out, or switch user to get to the log-in screen - the one that appears when you first start the computer. Login to the Guest account from there. You may need to enable it first in which case follow sanjampet's instructions.
look at te in/out jack, is there a red light, if there is the port is in the digital mode. Take a toothpick and carefully wiggle it around in there if te red light is on, as there is a normaling switch that changes it from analog to digital, and sometimes it get stuck. BE GENTLE!
Hi, I logged on as a guest, thanks for the instructions. Still no sound.
Okay, it's a bit of a long shot with this problem but worth a try - do a PRAM reset and an SMC reset - in that order:
My solution for "No Sound Output to MacBook Speakers" - Re-route Sound Input / Output
I have had this problem on my MacBook Pro, and tried EVERYTHING Apple & Forums suggested - SMC reset, PRAM reset. Apple advised me to send it in for servicing. Since it isn't covered by warranty, I didn't want to do that.
If you do not want to pay Apple to fix your MacBook optical sound jack hardware, you can overcome the problem with this procedure I came up with myself, which overcomes the hardware failure caused by the headphone jack optical sensor thinking something is plugged in there when there isn't.
Ironically, this solution requires a jack be inserted into the headphone jack. Annoying, but workable and free.
Step 1. Plug headphones in (don’t worry, you won’t use them)
Step 2. Change System Preferences -> Sound -> Change Internal Speakers to an Input!
Step 3. Done!
Obviously when you do want to use the headphones, you must revert this setting. 😀
Cheers for that, it worked for me. 🙂
