Hold down option while rebooting. Select terminal, then type "resetpassword".

Just open System Prefs > User & Groups. Click the padlock (bottom left), it usually is locked, enter the master password. Then select your Admin user from the list on the left, click the Password tabs then 'change password' button. Enter the master password in the 'old password' field but leave the 'new password' & 'verify' field empty, the click 'change password'.

Now you will not have a master admin user password.

*PLEASE NOTE - this will make your system more vulnerable

I am a windows user trying to get an answer to this question also, so I can help a friend with a MacBook Pro solve the problem of how to reset the MASTER password on her computer. She knows even less than I do about doing system level changes, so I could really use some help and hand-holding from more experienced mac users. I thought I might have found the answer to her problem in this thread, but it seems not.

shldr2thewheel gave instructions on resetting the user password. We and Anandbhutkar need to reset the MASTER password.

jeremy_yllim apparently missed the part in the original question where Anandbhutkar said he had forgotten the master password, making it a little hard to enter the master password at that point in the instructions.

HACKINT0SH sounds like he might have the correct instructions, but I have no idea what the "option" key is and I doubt my friend does either.

So can someone here help a poor benighted windows user and a low-tech MAC user with instructions on how to set the MASTER password on her system. Would sure appreciate it. I promise I won't ever say anything bad about MACs again

    Please help!!!

At first I had forgotten my admin password and made numerous attempts. Then I tried to reboot my macbookpro by pressing " command S" numerous attempts but it failed to reboot as well. Since I had forgotten my master password as well I had attempted to reboot my computer by pressing " option" key. Now I have a huge lock icon on my screen. What do I do????

With the password function so easy to bypass, what's the point of having it?
