I can't say I've ever had that problem, no. 😐 However, I'm assuming you're talking about inserting a heart symbol in text, like this: ♥.
Go to System Preferences -> Language & Text (or whatever it's called in Mac OS X 10.5), go to the Input Sources item and check the box next to Keyboard & Character viewer. That will add a menu at the right side of your menu bar that allows you to show the Character Viewer. Do that, and find the heart symbol (among the many, many other symbols). Double-click it to insert it.
the MenuBar is that white bar across the top of the screen in every well-crafted Mac Applications that has:
File Edit ... and so on.
Over on the right, if you followed the directions properly, there will now be a new icon or a flag that can be used to get to the character viewer.
Can you be more clear? Are you trying to draw heart pictures, play a game of hearts, type a heart symbol, or something else entirely?

Now... if I can just figure out how to dot all of my "i"s with a little heart.
This is really helpful thank you Thomas, but what do you mean by "that will add a menu at the right side of your menu bar?" where is the menu bar?
