Sounds like you may have to delete some setting storage files with the MBA mail program. Does your model have 'Time Machine'?, have you used 'Time Machine'?; if yes you may be able to restore the mail application. Also, did you contact your mail service to see if there are issues with Apple devices?

Hi PuertoRican,

I tried deleting them but it says can not be deleted as they are part of mac OSX files(this was the mail icon in finder, not sure im trying to delete the right file).

I do have time machine on this model but have never used it, do not a external drive.

I also upgraded to Lion 10.7.3 yesterday thinking this would solve the mail issue but exactly the same again! & today have tried deleting all keychain passwords for mail and deleted accounts in mail and started again but not worked either!!

its on mail 5.2 and was 4.5 on snow leopard, think last time it worked was on 4.2 or somthing like that.

So......... how do i find these storage files your talking about (sorry not too clued up) or how do i go back to a earlier mail?

Thanks

I think I just fixed it! Seems Mail changed (for no reason) the Advanced preferences in Accounts. AT&T server was full. All I did was go to Mail Preferences, select the account and under Advanced - Remove copy from server after retrieving a message, I selected to Remove Now and set it to delete After one week and voila!!

All is fine and dandy! 🙂

I have exactly the same issue on OSX LION. I cannot get the mail app to send using my ISP's SMTP mail server (smtp.xs4all.nl). It works on my MBP, IPad and iphone but not on my imac. It used to work and out of the blue stopped working. I tried different settings, SSL on/off different port numbers, deleting the mail cache etc etc. No joy. i turned off my firewall for testing, no joy. i reinstalled LION and again no joy. if I setup a email account with the same settings in Entourage it works fine. Sparrow fails. I can telnet to the SMTP server. Other SMTP servers work fine in MAIL. The only difference I can find between my MBP and IMAC setup is that my MBP is on an earlier build of MAIL. My imac uses mail 5.2 - 1278. If anybody has any idea's please let me know.

I have the exact same issue. - Im using Lion. the problem started this week when returning home from Amsterdam and Paris. I can receive Gmail but not send. I can send and receive Gmail from Safari. Mail is not sending. Tried editing the SMTP server list multiple times, checking the ports, running Telnet etc. everything should be working. I called my ISP also to see if they could see anything... everything's 'green' on their end. The only thing I haven't done is delete mail and re-install.

Same problem, i cure this by having to enter the network providers smtp every where I go, its a bloody nusance! So every where i go I have to demand the network providers smtp, it can be a bit imbarrasimg as often the it guy will not give it for security reasons. This is the message i get on my 3gs through all the ios versions - the recipient johnapplemailiscrap@seed.com was rejected by the server because it does not allow relaying, and it's the same problem on my MBPR 10.8.1. Please some one, please solve this.
