There's only one entry in "all contacts". When you drag it to a group it creates a pointer to the entry, it doesn't move it. An address entry can be a member of more than one group. Just drag it to the groups you want and delete it from groups you don't.

I think you answered my question. My issue is that I sometimes enter an new contact in the All Contacts group. Later for example, I discover that I want it in my Business Contacts group. I want to then move the entire contact from group to group without re-entering every detail.
All cards will be part of "All Contacts" so you want to leave them there. When you drag it to the Business group it will exist in All contacts and the Business group. If you want to remove it from a group, highlight the group then highlight the contact and select Addressbook > edit > cut.
Groups just contain pointers to the card in "all contacts".

What if the cards wont drag to another group? I am having that problem running 10.8.4,synching with icloud and using 7.1 version of contacts.
