I was all set to buy a new Macbook Pro, and I know Final Cut Studio 3 will run on Lion, but I've just realised that my version of Studio is an upgrade from 2. Since Studio 2 doesnt seem compatible with Lion am I at a dead end here in trying to get FCP 7 etc onto a new machine? Can I install it without installing Studio 2 first?

As long as you have the serial numbers from the earlier version, you're fine.

You just do the install for studio 3. Or am I missing something? It will ask you for both the serial numbers of fcp studio 2 and 3. But you will have to install rosetta from a snowleopard install disk to run the installer.
Ok. I thought i might actually have to install Studio 2 first and then install the upgrade, from what you say thats not the case.
