MBP headphone output - left signal louder

When mixing down some music in Logic, I recently discovered that the headphone jack output on my MBP is not very well balanced. The stereo signal is distinctly louder in the left channel than in the right - judging from a rough mix, I need to pan about 20 % to the right in order for the signal to be as loud in both my external speakers / headphone speakers. I have this problem with all the audio I play, be it in Logic, Spotify, iTunes, ...

I'm hoping it's a software problem. Any ideas ? Thanks in advance.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

Try opening the settings menu and click on sound. When the output tab is selected you can balance the left/right output.

Also, make sure the plug is fully seating into the jack and both are completely clean and debris free. I've had some headphones which don't go in all the way and then don't make full contact with both channels.

Thanks Brian708 & Courcoul for the suggestions, but I'm afraid neither is the solution...I've got the problem with all my headphones and also when I connect the laptop to my stereo using a mini-jack cable.

I don't notive any difference in volume when I play stuff over the built-in speakers..
