7.6.1 Airport Extreme Update problem

Last night I updated my Airport Extreme to 7.6.1 firmware. Since the upgrade all of my radio connections keep dropping out. I have now reverted back to the 7.6 firmware and my radio connections are all back to normal.

Has anybody else experienced this issue?

Many thanks for the help, Carlo TD. I think I am half-way there. I have reset all Airport devices and the

MacBook Pro now reports "Excellent" connection -- and allows me to use AU 6.0 to configure the Airport devices to the "Extend wireless network . . " option. So my current configuration looks like this:

User uploaded file

Ideally I would like the "Cellar TC" to be parent to the Extreme and Express, but can't

find a way to get AU to reconfigure the hierarchy (though it shouldn't make much difference).

Next step: to see if the iMac (Lion 10.7.3 + AU 6.0) can achieve the same result. [It

connects via the Cellar TC, to the same extended network - currently showing no Airport

devices visible :-(

Thanks again, SteveS19

you can even open up your system preferences, and select the icloud tab and choose "back to my mac." I have an external harddrive connected to one of my routers, and I am able to access it 99.9% of the time, provided I have internet. So I could actually save a file onto my home external hard drive (a small file) and be in a different state or country. I use the external hd for my itunes library. 😉😉 (only audio works - video is to big to stream throught the internet... but that is the next step... Apple is looking to do.)

Hi, I to updated, like a fool...to 7.6.1, and everything fried...only my mac could connect via wifi, none of my iphones, some wired can some cannot...*** right??!

As I combed the config I noticed that the airport had asssigned 192.168.1.1 as the primary DNS and a public as the secondary, being experienced in routing and switching I initially thought 'this is weird', but also thought well...if self-assigned perhaps the airport is its own DNS server with this update, could work, besides the secondary should work if the primary does not so I did not think much of it. As I was on with apple support this morning, actually found someone with a stem, she and I walked thru a few things and I questioned the DNS settings. She too agreed that was strange so I changed it to a logical public DNS address and finally my iphones can connect...but not my roku...but this might be a roku issue.

if Jobs was there he'd cornhole someone over this, someone skrewed the pewch on this one me thinks. Check your DNS.

Issues with 7.6.1 too here.

I had set up a network with 7 devices connecting very smoothly to the network.

I was able to connect only 4 out of 7 after the upgrade.

Now i've downgraded to 7.6 but i'm hassling with the settings again as i'd changed few things around, and forgot how to get back to that perfect set up i had before upgrading.

I'm on Snow Leopard, so i'm still using airport utility 5.5.3

Will do a hard reset on the apple express hoping it'll bring back things to normal.

Anyway, looks like the firmware upgrade created more problems than real advantages.

Bummer.

FYI

Like some of you, i too have reverted to firmware 7.6, but unfortunately it didn't work out for me, meaning that i'm still able to connect only 4 devices out of 7 (2 on ethernet and 2 wifi).

I know my provider imposes a limit of 3/5 devices, but prior to upgrading i had found a setup with NAT where i could connect on the network with all of them at the same time if i wanted.

However now i can't anymore.

Can anyone help?

here are my specs

Wireless:

radio mode: automatic

radio channel: automatic

security: wpa/wpa2

Access Control:

Disabled

Internet/internet connection:

thank you!

EDIT: I was seeing a Data Rate of 11 Mb/s for my MacBook Air 2011, even though my signal Quality was Excellent with a RSSI dB of about -32. When I have the Radio Mode: 802.11n only (2.4GHz) setting on, I see a Data Rate of 144 Mb/s, which is the highest achievable rate with any Apple AirPort device on 802.11n (2.4GHz).

I have an AirPort Express. Here are the troubleshooting tips that seem to work for me.

I tried doing this thinking since it was a new update, Apple probably changed how settings are saved to the AirPort so to make sure all settings are saved properly and to reduce or eliminate bugs, I suggest doing this to start things off:

Try restoring your Airport by opening the AirPort Utility, click on the AirPort device, then Base Station in the menu bar on the top of your desktop, and finally Restore Default Settings... This seems to have fixed some issues for me on my AirPort Express 802.11n.

Later I found that my MacBook would load very slowly or not even load webpages at all. I saw I was receiving a 11 Mb/s Data Rate like there was a 802.11b device connected even though my MacBook was the only wireless client connected to my AirPort. I just tried this and played a 5-minute 1080p YouTube video and it did not stutter once. Hopefully this sticks and is the fix we are all looking for:

If you can deal with having 802.11n only Wi-Fi, then click on your AirPort device in AirPort Utility, click Edit > Wireless > Wireless Options... > Radio Mode: > 802.11n only (2.4GHz) > Save > Update

I was already having wireless issues with the Motorola gateway Time Warner Cable gave us to use Road Runner with and I set up my AirPort to extend the network through ethernet to make a fix. Now my AirPort is having issues too, unless a RSSI db of -80 from my neighbors is interferring on the channel 6 that I use with it, but I find that highly unlikely seeing how a number of others are having issues as well. I hope the Time Capsule I am getting on Monday does not have similar issues. The 7.6.1 update definitely has some bugs.

Here is something I wrote in another thread... I could honestly say I have no problems connecing to wifi when waking the computer. If you go to System Prefences and Network, choose your network; put a check mark in the box that says "Show Wifi status in menu bar," next click the advanced buton, Under Preferred Networks, minus out of all the networks, and put a check mark where it says "remember networks this computer has joined."

It is that simple. If you have trouble, then you just select the wifi symbol that looks like a tornado (that you now have) located next to the time on the menu bar.

I really wish you shared my joy with Lion, because, while I have had minor (fixable) issues that I have accomplished, Lion is really great. And I wish you shared my sentiment or at least tried to utilize 10.7.3 or use recovery assistant to get you back to optimum. The Recovery Disk Assistant is reached by starting the computer from starting the computer and holding down the Command + R keys at the same time, and reinstalling Lion from the server, (not TimeMachine), it could also be found in your utility folder.

A Factory default reset is probably the best thing to do when resetting your AirPort device. Here are the instructions to do so:

  1. Disconnect the AirPort Express from power.
  2. Press and hold the reset button with a pen or pencil, then plug the AirPort Express back in while continuing to hold the button until you see the light flash rapidly. This should happen after a few seconds.
  3. Release the button. The AirPort Express will factory default reset.

I forgot to mention before that you can find the Data Rate for your wireless clients in the AirPort Utility on Mac by clicking on your AirPort device(s) and hovering over the MAC address of your client. The Network Utility on Mac will only show what the highest achievable rate is, not the actual data rate you are experiencing.

That is not very easy or feasable. Press and hold the reset button while the Airport Express is plugged in. When the light flashes rapidly, release the pen. (This is known as a hard reset.) Or you could simply select the router using Airport Utility 6.0 and go to the menu and tell it to reset to factory settings. (This is known as a soft reset).

I am sorry but the method you describe to do a hard reset is wrong!
