Mac mini boot problem

I have a mid 2007 1.83ghz Mac mini that will not recognize the hard drive. It powers on,bongs, shows apple logo, sees optic drive, but can't see the hard drive. It will see a remote hard drive through USB,and snow leopard install disc when powering up using option key but will not boot when pressing shift key, goes into kernal panic. What are the chances of the interconnect board being at fault? Any other help would be MUCH appreciated.

Mac mini, Mac OS X (10.6.6)

It sounds like the hard drive needs replacing not the motherboard, not such a huge task to do yourself with a kit from OWC ..

I don't understand that, in your earlier post you said

It will see a remote hard drive through USB,and snow leopard install disc when powering up using option key

If you can get it to boot from either an external volume or disc then:

a) The motherboard is fine

b) You can re-install the OS and start over

If not then the visit is in order ...
