E-mail appears in unreadable characters after installing Microsoft Office for Mac

I recently installed Microsoft Office for Mac 2011.

Now, many of my e-mails are appearing in unreadable characters. The only way I am able to read them is by selecting 'View', 'Message', and 'Plain Text Alternative.'

Is there a setting I can change to correct this issue? I am assuming it has to do with the install of Office for Mac and a default reader of some sort, but I can't seem to find it.

Thanks so much!

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

One thing you can try is running Repair Disk Permissions in Disk Utility which you can find at Applications - Utilities - Disk Utility. Also what mail tool are you using, Mail or Outlook? There are some other troubleshooting steps you can take but let first find out how Repairing Disk Permissions works and what Mail tool you're using.
